Temps (Tenses)
Master the distinction between certainty and subjectivity to eliminate syntax errors on TEF and TCF Canada.
Use the Indicatif for objective facts, certainties, and affirmative opinion verbs (Je pense qu'il viendra). Use the Subjonctif for subjective feelings, doubts, obligations, negative opinion verbs (Je ne pense pas qu'il vienne), and specific conjunctions (bien que, pour que).
Distinguishing certainty from subjectivity prevents costly grammar deductions in TEF/TCF Writing & Speaking.
Je suis sûr qu'il **est** là. (Indicatif - Certainty)
I am sure he is there.
Je ne suis pas sûr qu'il **soit** là. (Subjonctif - Uncertainty)
I am not sure he is there.
Il est clair que ce projet **fonctionne**. (Indicatif)
It is clear that this project works.
Il est douteux que ce projet **fonctionne**. (Subjonctif)
It is doubtful that this project works.
À éviter
J'espère qu'il vienne.
Dites plutôt
J'espère qu'il viendra.
Pourquoi: 'Espérer que' takes the Indicatif (Futur simple), NOT the Subjunctive! However, 'souhaiter que' takes the Subjunctive.
Espérer = Indicatif! Souhaiter = Subjonctif!
Remember: Espérer + Indicatif | Souhaiter + Subjonctif. Penser (yes) + Indicatif | Penser (no) + Subjonctif.
When giving your opinion in TEF Writing Task B, use both forms strategically: 'Il est clair que la technologie apporte des avantages (Indicatif), mais il est indispensable que les citoyens restent vigilants (Subjonctif)'.
