The subjonctif (the subjunctive) is one of the French grammatical moods along with the indicative, conditional and imperative moods.
The subjunctive is a mood — not a tense — used in subordinate clauses after expressions of emotion, doubt, necessity, desire, and certain conjunctions. It is triggered by que after verbs like vouloir, falloir, and être content. Common irregular subjunctives: être → je sois, avoir → j'aie, faire → je fasse, aller → j'aille.
