Use à for cities (à Paris), en for feminine countries (en France), au for masculine countries (au Canada), aux for plural countries (aux États-Unis). Never mix: 'à Paris en France' is redundant — pick one destination.
Je suis dans le bus.
Je suis dans le bus. (inside) / Je suis en bus. (by bus)
Dans means physically INSIDE. En means by means of transportation. Dans le bus = inside the vehicle. En bus = by bus (the mode of transport). Both are correct but mean different things.
Je vais au docteur.
Je vais chez le docteur.
Use chez for people's places: chez le docteur, chez moi, chez Marie. Au/à la is for businesses: au magasin, à la boulangerie. Chez = at the place/home of a person.
🪆 The Preposition Nesting Doll
French location prepositions are like a nesting doll. SUR (on) means contact with a surface. DANS (in) means inside a container. À (at) points to a location. EN (in) for regions and countries. CHEZ (at the place of) for people. Start from the most specific (sur/dans) and work outward to the most general (à/en). The nesting doll always fits!
Prepositions of place are tested from A1 through B1 in TEF/TCF. A1: basic sur, sous, dans, devant, derrière. A2: à vs en vs au/aux for geographical names. B1: nuanced pairs like dans vs en, à côté de vs près de, and the chez distinction. Geographical preposition errors (en France but au Canada) are among the most common mistakes even at intermediate levels.

Pardon, le Café de Flore, c'est où ?
C'est dans le sixième. Allez tout droit, puis tournez à gauche devant l'église.
C'est loin d'ici ? Je suis garé près du marché.
