Ang bawat French noun ay may gender—maaaring masculine o feminine. Ang pag-unawa rito ang golden key sa pagdalubhasa sa mga article at adjective agreement. Sanayin ito gamit ang PrepMyFrench exercises upang malinang ang iyong intuwisyon!
French noun gender can often be predicted by the word ending. Feminine endings include -tion, -sion, -té, -ure, -ance, -ence, -ade, -ette, -esse, -ine, and -ise. Masculine endings include -ment, -eau, -isme, -age, -oir, and -acle. The best strategy is to always learn the article (le/la or un/une) together with each new noun.
👗 The Gender Wardrobe
Think of noun endings as gender 'outfits.' Feminine nouns wear: -TION (la nation), -TÉ (la beauté), -URE (la nature), -ETTE (la fourchette). Masculine nouns wear: -MENT (le gouvernement), -EAU (le bateau), -ISME (le tourisme), -AGE (le fromage — but une image and une plage crash the masculine party!). Learn the outfits, not individual words.
Gender errors are penalized in every TEF/TCF task involving writing or speaking. Even at A1, using le for a feminine noun costs points. At B1+, examiners expect near-perfect gender accuracy. Focus on learning the most common exceptions: -tion words are always feminine, -age words are masculine (except: une page, une plage, une cage, une image, la rage, la nage), and words ending in -ée are feminine.
A student studying French vocabulary:
Pourquoi dit-on 'un problème' mais 'une solution' ?
Bonne question ! Problème vient du grec — tous les mots en -ème sont masculins. Solution vient du latin -tion — tous les mots en -tion sont féminins. C'est une règle absolue.
Et 'une image' ? Ça finit par -age mais c'est féminin !
Bravo, tu as trouvé une des exceptions ! Apprends-les par cœur : une image, une plage, une cage, une page, une rage.
