又称: y and en · French adverbial pronouns · pronoun y · pronoun en
Y and en are French adverbial pronouns that replace prepositional phrases. Y usually replaces à plus a place or thing; en usually replaces de plus a thing, source, or quantity. They go before the conjugated verb in most simple sentences.
Y does not normally replace à + person; use lui or leur instead. En can replace quantities: j'en ai trois, and de-phrases such as j'en parle.
Correct y/en use makes speech and writing more natural by reducing repetition and showing advanced pronoun control.
