How to Pass TCF Canada Task 2 Speaking Without Freezing

In Task 2 of the TCF Canada Speaking Exam (Expression Orale), the tables are turned: you are the one asking the questions.

You are given a scenario (e.g., "You want to join a local theater group. Ask the director questions to get information.") and you have 3 minutes and 30 seconds to bombard the examiner with continuous, relevant questions.

For many candidates, asking questions for over three minutes feels like an eternity. They ask the basic Where? When? How much? and run out of ideas after 45 seconds. Then, an uncomfortable silence fills the room.

If you want to achieve a CLB 9+, you cannot let the conversation die. Here is the foolproof framework to generate endless, high-level questions.

The W-W-H-L-O Framework

To ensure you never run out of things to ask, memorize this acronym: W-W-H-L-O (Who, What, How, Logistics, Opinion). It gives you five distinct "buckets" of questions to draw from.

1. The "Who" Bucket (Les Participants)

Ask about the people involved. This shows you can use relative pronouns and descriptive language.

(What is the typical profile of the other members?)
(Is there an age limit to register?)
(How many people are there on average per group?)

2. The "What/Content" Bucket (Le Contenu)

Ask about the specific activities or details of the service.

(Could you describe the flow of a typical session to me?)
(Is the equipment provided, or must I bring my own?)
  • Quels sont les niveaux requis pour participer ? (What are the required levels to participate?)

3. The "How/Financial" Bucket (Les Finances)

Don't just ask "C'est combien ?" Elevate your vocabulary.

(What are the current rates for an annual subscription?)
(Do you offer payment facilities, like paying in installments?)
(Are there any additional registration fees to anticipate?)

4. The "Logistics" Bucket (L'Organisation)

Ask about the practical details (time, location, rules).

(If I have a conflict, is it possible to postpone the session?)
(What are your opening hours during public holidays?)
  • Où se déroulent exactement les activités ? (Where exactly do the activities take place?)

5. The "Opinion/Experience" Bucket (L'Opinion)

This is the golden bucket. Asking the examiner for their personal opinion forces them to talk more, which eats up the clock and makes the conversation feel highly natural.

(In your opinion, what is the biggest advantage of your program?)
(Based on your experience, what do participants appreciate the most?)
(Would you have any advice to give me before I make my decision?)

The Secret to a High Score: Grammatical Variety

Asking 15 questions that all start with Est-ce que will keep you stuck at a B1/B2 level. To score a C1, you must use Inversion and Indirect Questions.

How to Practice Task 2

The only way to get comfortable with the W-W-H-L-O framework is to practice it out loud.

Pick a random scenario right now: You are calling a dog training school. Set a timer for 3.5 minutes and try to ask questions non-stop, cycling through the five buckets.

Want to know if your questions are grammatically correct? Use the PrepMyFrench Speaking Simulator. It acts as the examiner, answers your questions in real-time, and grades your interrogative structures, ensuring you are hitting that C1 criteria.
