TEF Speaking Section B: The "A-I-D-A" Persuasion Framework to Convince Your Friend

TEF Speaking Section B: The "A-I-D-A" Persuasion Framework
Section B of the TEF Canada Speaking test is notoriously difficult. You are given a document (an advertisement, a job posting, or an event flyer) and you must convince a "friend" (played by the examiner) to participate in this activity with you.
The trap? The examiner is specifically instructed to resist your arguments. They will give you excuses: "It's too expensive," "I don't have time," "I don't like that kind of activity."
If you just read the facts from the document, you will fail. You must actively persuade. To do this, you need the A-I-D-A Framework: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.
1. Attention: The Enthusiastic Hook
Do not start by reading the document. Start with high energy and immediately grab your friend's attention.
(Hi, I saw an ad for a cooking class.) Use the A-I-D-A Hook: "Salut ! (Hi! You'll never guess what I just found! I know you love gastronomy, so I have the perfect activity for us this weekend!)
2. Interest: Presenting the Features
Now, introduce the core details from the document, but frame them as exciting opportunities.
(It's an Italian cooking workshop given by a top chef. It's happening Saturday afternoon downtown.)

3. Desire: Countering the Objections
This is where the examiner will push back. (Sounds good, but I'm tired this weekend...)
You must create Desire by linking the activity to a solution for their objection.
Objection: "It's too expensive." (I understand, but listen, the price includes all the materials and the meal at the end! Plus, if we sign up together, we get a 20% discount. It's really worth it, right?)
Objection: "I don't have time." Tu en as vraiment besoin !" (Come on, it only lasts two hours! It's the perfect opportunity to unwind and forget the stress of work. You really need it!)
Objection: "I'm not good at this." (Don't worry at all! It's specially designed for beginners. The goal is to have fun and learn together without any pressure.)
4. Action: The Assumptive Close
Do not end the conversation by asking if they want to think about it. End by assuming they are going to say yes, and pushing for the next step.
(Well, I see you're still hesitating, but trust me, we're going to have a blast. I'll take care of the reservation tonight, okay? Let's meet at 2 PM on Saturday!)
