TCF Speaking Task 3: 15 Advanced French Phrases to Defend Your Opinion

Task 3 of the TCF Canada Speaking test is the most heavily weighted section for candidates aiming for CLB 7, 8, or 9.

In this task, the examiner will ask your opinion on a complex societal issue (e.g., universal basic income, the impact of social media, remote work, or environmental regulations). You must express a clear opinion, develop an argument, and—crucially—defend your stance when the examiner challenges you.

If you are still starting your sentences with "Je pense que" (I think that) and "C'est bien parce que" (It's good because), you will not get a high score.

Here are 15 advanced French phrases to elevate your Task 3 performance.

1. Introducing Your Opinion (Nuanced)

Don't just say "I agree" or "I disagree." Show that you understand the complexity of the issue.

1. "C'est une question très controversée, mais à mon sens..." (It's a highly controversial question, but to my mind...)
2. "Je suis partagé(e) sur ce sujet, d'une part... d'autre part..." (I am torn on this subject, on the one hand... on the other hand...)
3. "Il est indéniable que [Fact], cependant je suis convaincu(e) que..." (It is undeniable that [Fact], however I am convinced that...)
4. "Personnellement, je penche plutôt pour l'idée que..." (Personally, I lean more towards the idea that...)

2. Structuring Your Arguments

A high-level response must be organized logically. Use these connectors to guide the examiner through your thought process.

5. "Le premier argument qui me vient à l'esprit est..." (The first argument that comes to mind is...)
6. "De surcroît, il ne faut pas négliger le fait que..." (Furthermore, we must not neglect the fact that...)
7. "En fin de compte, l'enjeu principal réside dans..." (Ultimately, the main issue lies in...)
8. "Pour illustrer mon propos, prenons l'exemple de..." (To illustrate my point, let's take the example of...)

3. Conceding a Point (The Subjunctive Flex)

When the examiner presents a counter-argument, the best strategy is to concede their point briefly before reinforcing your own. This is the perfect place to use the subjunctive!

9. "Bien qu'il soit vrai que [Subjunctive], il n'en reste pas moins que..." (Although it is true that [Subjunctive], the fact remains that...)
10. "Je vous accorde ce point. Néanmoins..." (I grant you that point. Nevertheless...)
11. "Il est tout à fait possible que [Subjunctive], mais cela ne change rien au problème de fond." (It is entirely possible that [Subjunctive], but that changes nothing about the fundamental problem.)

4. Defending Against Pushback

When the examiner directly challenges you, hold your ground politely but firmly using advanced vocabulary.

12. "Je comprends votre point de vue, mais permettez-moi d'insister sur le fait que..." (I understand your point of view, but allow me to insist on the fact that...)
13. "C'est un argument valable, mais on pourrait aussi objecter que..." (That's a valid argument, but one could also object that...)
14. "Je ne suis pas tout à fait de cet avis. Au contraire..." (I am not entirely of that opinion. On the contrary...)
15. "Si l'on pousse ce raisonnement jusqu'au bout, on risque de..." (If we push this reasoning to the end, we risk...)
