How to Pass TCF Canada Task 2 Speaking Without Freezing
In Task 2 of the TCF Canada Speaking Exam (Expression Orale), the tables are turned: you are the one asking the questions.
You are given a scenario (e.g., "You want to join a local theater group. Ask the director questions to get information.") and you have 3 minutes and 30 seconds to bombard the examiner with continuous, relevant questions.
For many candidates, asking questions for over three minutes feels like an eternity. They ask the basic Where? When? How much? and run out of ideas after 45 seconds. Then, an uncomfortable silence fills the room.
If you want to achieve a CLB 9+, you cannot let the conversation die. Here is the foolproof framework to generate endless, high-level questions.
The W-W-H-L-O Framework
To ensure you never run out of things to ask, memorize this acronym: W-W-H-L-O (Who, What, How, Logistics, Opinion). It gives you five distinct "buckets" of questions to draw from.
1. The "Who" Bucket (Les Participants)
Ask about the people involved. This shows you can use relative pronouns and descriptive language.
The Secret to a High Score: Grammatical Variety
Asking 15 questions that all start with Est-ce que will keep you stuck at a B1/B2 level. To score a C1, you must use Inversion and Indirect Questions.
Avoid (B1):
How to Practice Task 2
The only way to get comfortable with the W-W-H-L-O framework is to practice it out loud.
Pick a random scenario right now: You are calling a dog training school. Set a timer for 3.5 minutes and try to ask questions non-stop, cycling through the five buckets.
