SLE Oral Test Level C Question Types

Quick Answer

SLE oral level C questions test whether you can discuss complex workplace topics with nuance. Expect questions about your work, past projects, recommendations, hypothetical situations, policy trade-offs, conflict, leadership, and abstract opinions. Level C is not about perfect accent. It is about organized, spontaneous French.

What Level C Means

In the Government of Canada SLE, level B is enough for many routine bilingual positions. Level C is different. It certifies that you can handle complex and abstract work situations in your second official language.

At level C, the assessor listens for:

• detailed explanations
• clear organization
• nuance
• ability to defend a view
• ability to handle hypothetical questions
• control of past, present, future, and conditional forms
• vocabulary suited to workplace discussion

Question Type 1: Describe Your Work

These questions sound simple, but level C answers need depth.

Examples:

• What are your main responsibilities?
• Describe a project you worked on recently.
• How does your team make decisions?
• What has changed in your role?

B-level answer: list duties.

C-level answer: explain context, priorities, constraints, and impact.

Useful structure:

1. Context.
2. Responsibility.
3. Challenge.
4. Result.

Question Type 2: Give Advice or Recommendations

Level C often asks you to advise a colleague, manager, or department.

Examples:

• What would you recommend to improve communication in a team?
• How should a manager support employees during change?
• What advice would you give to a new employee?

Use conditional language:

• Je recommanderais de...
• Il serait preferable de...
• On pourrait envisager...
• A mon avis, la priorite devrait etre...

Question Type 3: Handle Hypothetical Situations

The conditional is central to level C.

Examples:

• What would you do if a project were delayed?
• How would you respond if two colleagues disagreed?
• If you had more resources, what would you change?

A strong answer explains not only what you would do, but why.

Frame:

“

Si j'etais dans cette situation, je commencerais par [action], parce que [reason]. Ensuite, je chercherais a [second action]. Cela permettrait de [result].

”

Question Type 4: Discuss Pros and Cons

Level C requires balance.

Examples:

• What are the advantages and disadvantages of remote work?
• Is artificial intelligence useful in government?
• Should services become more digital?

Do not give a one-sided answer. Use contrast:

• D'un cote...
• En revanche...
• Cela dit...
• Il faut trouver un equilibre entre...

Question Type 5: Explain a Conflict or Problem

Workplace conflict questions test diplomacy and abstraction.

Examples:

• Tell me about a difficult situation at work.
• How do you manage disagreement?
• What makes collaboration difficult?

Avoid blaming people. Talk about process, communication, expectations, and solutions.

Level C Answer Formula

Use this formula when you feel stuck:

1. Direct answer.
2. Reason.
3. Example.
4. Nuance.
5. Conclusion.

Example:

Je pense que la communication est essentielle dans une equipe hybride. D'abord, elle permet d'eviter les malentendus. Par exemple, lorsqu'un projet avance rapidement, un court suivi ecrit peut clarifier les responsabilites. Cela dit, il ne faut pas multiplier les reunions inutilement.
