DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) is an official French-language diploma issued by the French Ministry of Education and administered by France Éducation international. It certifies CEFR levels A1, A2, B1, and B2, and — unlike TCF or TEF test results — the diploma is valid for life.
Applicants for French residence cards and nationality (A2 for the multi-year card, B1 for the 10-year carte de résident, B2 for naturalisation from January 2026), university applicants in France (B2 is the usual admission minimum), and learners who want permanent proof of a CEFR level.
Each level tests listening, reading, writing, and speaking, each scored out of 25 for a total of 100. Pass mark is 50/100 with an elimination threshold of 5/25 per section. Levels are independent diplomas — you can register directly for B2 without taking the lower levels.
DELF covers A1-B2; DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) covers C1 and C2. Both are lifetime diplomas from the same issuing body.
