TCF Speaking Task 2: Mastering the "Simulated Conversation" Roleplay

Introduction: The Artificial Conversation Challenge

Of all the tasks in the TCF Canada Speaking exam, Tâche 2 (the Roleplay) is often the most nerve-wracking. Unlike Tâche 1 (Self-introduction) or Tâche 3 (The Monologue), Task 2 requires you to interact with an examiner who is pretending to be someone else—a shopkeeper, a friend, a landlord, or a travel agent.

You have 3 to 4 minutes to "perform" a conversation. The goal isn't just to speak French; it's to interact naturally, ask relevant questions, and respond to the examiner's challenges.

In this 2000-word guide, we’ll break down the specific "Simulated Conversation" framework that our students at prepmyfrench.com use to score CLB 9 and 10.

Section 1: The Anatomy of Task 2

Task 2 is a "Simulated Situation" (Mise en situation). You will be given a prompt (a card) describing a scenario.

Example Prompt:

What the Examiner is Looking For:

  1. Interaction: Do you listen to the answer and follow up? Or do you just read a list of prepared questions?
  2. Adaptability: Can you handle it when the examiner says, "No, that date is booked" or "That is too expensive"?
  3. Linguistic Precision: Are your question structures correct (Est-ce que..., Pourriez-vous..., Quel est...)?
  4. Register: Are you using the correct level of formality (Tu vs. Vous)?

Section 2: The "Triple A" Framework (Ask, Adapt, Advance)

To dominate this task, you need to follow a structure. Don't just "wing it."

1. Ask (The Information Phase)

The first 60 seconds should be spent gathering facts. Use a variety of question forms:

  • Inversion: Auriez-vous des disponibilités en juillet ?
  • Est-ce que: Est-ce que le petit-déjeuner est inclus ?
  • Interrogative words: Combien coûte la chambre par nuit ?

2. Adapt (The Negotiation Phase)

This is where most candidates fail. The examiner WILL throw a wrench in your plans.

  • Examiner: "Sorry, we have no more rooms for 4 people on those dates."
  • Bad Response: "Okay. When are there rooms?" (Too simple).

3. Advance (The Closing Phase)

Always end the conversation by "advancing" the plot.

Section 3: Standard Questions You Must Memorize

No matter the topic, certain questions are "golden" because they use complex grammar.

Section 4: The 5 Most Common Scenarios in 2025

Based on our recent "Predicted Questions" data at PrepMyFrench, these 5 scenarios are appearing in almost 60% of exams:

  1. The Repair Shop: your phone/car is broken, you need to know the price and turnaround time.
  2. The Gym Membership: asking about classes, prices, and cancellation policies.
  3. The Shared Apartment (Colocation): interviewing a potential roommate about their habits.
  4. The Library/Resource Center: asking about borrowing rules and membership.
  5. The Local Festival: gathering info on tickets, parking, and child-friendly activities.

Section 5: How to Use PrepMyFrench to Win Task 2

At prepmyfrench.com, we have developed a Speaking Simulator that is specifically designed to handle these interactions.

AI-Driven Feedback

When you practice Task 2 on our platform, our AI doesn't just listen; it roleplays back. You speak, the AI responds as the "travel agent" or "landlord," and then it gives you a CLB breakdown of your performance. It identifies if your questions were too repetitive or if you missed a "trap" laid by the simulate examiner.

Conclusion: Don't Be a Script-Reader

The biggest mistake is sounding like a robot. The TCF is a test of communication. Imagine you are actually in that travel agency. Be curious, be slightly demanding, and be polite.
