Section B: Persuading a Friend (TEF Speaking)

Section B of the TEF Canada Speaking Exam is a 10-minute informal roleplay. You have discovered a great activity (a sport, a trip, a new app) and you want to convince your friend (the examiner) to join you. The examiner will be "reluctant"—they will give you excuses (too expensive, no time, too tired). Your job is to persuade them using logic, enthusiasm, and informal language (Tutoiement).

In this guide, we master the art of French persuasion.

---

1. The Structure of the Argument

Don't just list features. Build a narrative:

1. The Pitch: Introduce the activity with excitement.
2. The "Why": Mention 3-4 distinct benefits (Health, Social, Cost, Originality).
3. The Rebound: Address every objection the friend (examiner) makes.
4. The Closing: Make a concrete plan (“On y va samedi ?”).

---

2. Informal Greetings and Connectors (Tutoiement)

• "Salut ! Tu as deux minutes ?"
• "Écoute, j'ai trouvé un truc génial !": Listen, I found something great!
• "Tu devrais vraiment essayer.": You should really try it.

3. Techniques of Persuasion

• Comparisons: “C'est beaucoup moins cher qu'une salle de sport classique.”

4. Handling Objections (La Relance)

The examiner will say no at first.

5. Varied Vocabulary for Enthusiasm

Avoid saying "C'est bon" 20 times.

• C'est incroyable / exceptionnel.
• C'est une opportunité à ne pas manquer.

6. Cultural Note: "L'Ambiance Amicale"

In France and Quebec, friendship is about "Partage" (Sharing). Trying to convince a friend is not seen as pestering; it’s seen as sharing something you love. Use a warm, energetic tone. Don't be afraid to use small informal fillers like "T'inquiète" (Don't worry) or "Franchement" (Honestly).
