Describe a Picture or Event: Painting with Words

Whether in the TCF Speaking task or general language interviews, being able to describe a visual scene or narrate a past event is a fundamental skill. It requires Spatial Vocabulary (where things are), Descriptive Adjectives (what they look like), and Action Verbs (what is happening).

In this guide, we master the art of the verbal portrait.

---

1. Describing a Picture (Spatial Logic)

Don't just name things at random. Use a logical path:

• Au premier plan: In the foreground.

2. Describing People and Actions

Focus on three layers:

1. Appearance: “C'est un homme d'une trentaine d'années, il a les cheveux courts et porte des lunettes.”
2. Clothing: “Il est habillé de manière décontractée.” (He is dressed casually).
3. Action: “Il est en train de lire un livre.” (He is in the middle of reading a book).

3. Narrating an Event (The Timeline)

When describing a past event (e.g., "Describe a memorable trip"), use your tenses correctly:

• L'Imparfait: For descriptions and context (“Il faisait beau, il y avait beaucoup de monde”).

4. Describing the Atmosphere (L'Ambiance)

To reach a B2 level, go beyond the literal. Describe the "Vibe":

• Une ambiance chaleureuse: A warm atmosphere.
• C'est un endroit paisible: It’s a peaceful place.

5. Strategic Tips for Visual Description

1. The Global-to-Local Rule: Start with a summary (“C'est une photo de famille dans un jardin”) before zooming in on details.
2. Hypothesize: If you aren't sure, use “Il semble que...” or “On dirait que...” (It looks like...).
3. Use the Five Senses: What can you (hypothetically) smell, hear, or feel in the scene?

6. Cultural Note: "Le Regard" (The Gaze)

Francophone culture values precise observation. When describing a scene, try to find a detail that tells a story. This "Sens du détail" is highly appreciated by examiners as it shows deep engagement with the prompt.
