TEF Reading Section B: Mastering Document Analysis (Real-World Texts)

Total Word Count: 1,850+ words

Section B of the TEF Reading Comprehension (Compréhension Écrite) is where things get real. You are no longer reading educational texts designed for learners. You are reading authentic French documents: job ads, apartment listings, event programs, administrative forms, and product descriptions.

Format:

  • 3-4 documents.
  • 5-7 questions per document.
  • Time: 45 minutes for the entire section.

The Challenge: These documents use dense vocabulary, abbreviations, and cultural references. They are designed to test your ability to extract specific information quickly, not to understand every word.

In this guide, I will teach you the "SCAN Strategy" (Skim, Context, Answer, Navigate) and break down the 5 most common document types.

Part 1: The SCAN Strategy

S - Skim the Questions FIRST

Never read the document from start to finish like a novel. You will waste time. Step 1: Read all the questions before touching the document.

  • Example Question: "Quelle est la date limite de candidature ?" (What is the application deadline?)
  • Mental Note: I am hunting for a DATE.

C - Context Clues (Document Type)

Identify the document type in 3 seconds.

  • Job Ad? Look for: Profil recherché, Compétences requises, Salaire, Envoyer CV.
  • Apartment Listing? Look for: Loyer, Charges, Surface, Disponibilité.
  • Event Program? Look for: Horaires, Lieu, Inscription.

A - Answer with Keywords

Once you know the question, scan for the exact keyword from the question.

  • Question: "Quel est le loyer mensuel ?" (What is the monthly rent?)
  • Scan for: "Loyer" or "€/mois."
  • Answer: "650 euros charges comprises."

Tip: The answer is almost always VERBATIM (word-for-word) from the document. Don't paraphrase in your head.

N - Navigate (Don't Get Stuck)

If you can't find the answer in 60 seconds, skip and come back. There are 20+ questions in Section B. You cannot afford to spend 5 minutes on one.

Part 2: The 5 Document Types (Detailed Breakdown)

Type 1: Job Advertisement (Offre d'emploi)

Structure:

  1. Company Name & Industry (Top).
  2. Job Title (Poste proposé).
  3. Required Profile (Profil recherché / Compétences).
  4. Conditions (Contrat, Salaire, Horaires).
  5. How to Apply (Envoyer CV à...).

Common Questions:

  • "Quel diplôme est requis ?" -> Scan for Bac+2, Master, Expérience...
  • "Quel type de contrat ?" -> Look for CDI (permanent), CDD (fixed-term), Stage (internship).
  • "Comment postuler ?" -> Look for email or website.

Trap: Sometimes the document says "Expérience souhaitée" (Desired) vs "Expérience exigée" (Required). The question might ask "Est-ce obligatoire ?" -> No if "souhaitée".

Type 2: Housing Advertisement (Annonce immobilière)

Structure:

  1. Location (City, District).
  2. Type (Appartement, Maison, Studio).
  3. Surface (m²).
  4. Rent (Loyer + Charges).
  5. Availability (Disponible à partir de...).
  6. Contact (Phone, Agency).

Vocabulary You MUST Know:

  • Charges comprises: Utilities included.
  • Caution: Deposit (usually 1-2 months rent).
  • DPE: Energy Performance Diagnosis (A to G rating).
  • Meublé / Non meublé: Furnished / Unfurnished.

Common Questions:

  • "Quand l'appartement sera-t-il libre ?" -> Scan for "Disponible le..."
  • "Quel est le montant total à payer ?" -> Loyer + Charges (if not "comprises").

Type 3: Event Program / Cultural Agenda (Programme d'événement)

Structure:

  1. Event Name & Theme.
  2. Date & Time (Du 10 au 15 mars, de 14h à 18h).
  3. Location (Salle, Adresse).
  4. Activities (Workshops, Concerts, Conferences).
  5. Registration (Sur inscription, Gratuit, Payant).

Common Questions:

  • "À quelle heure commence l'événement ?" -> Time.
  • "Est-ce gratuit ?" -> Look for Gratuit or Entrée libre vs 10€.
  • "Faut-il s'inscrire ?" -> Sur inscription = Yes.

Trap: "Tout public" means "Open to all" (no age restriction). If the question asks "Est-ce réservé aux adultes ?" -> No.

Type 4: Product Description / Technical Specifications (Fiche produit)

Structure:

  1. Product Name.
  2. Features (Caractéristiques techniques).
  3. Price.
  4. Warranty (Garantie).
  5. Delivery (Livraison).

Vocabulary:

  • Garantie: Warranty (e.g., Garantie 2 ans).
  • Livraison offerte: Free delivery.
  • Sous 48h: Within 48 hours.

Common Questions:

  • "Combien coûte la livraison ?" -> Look for "Frais de port" or "Livraison gratuite".
  • "Quelle est la durée de la garantie ?" -> "Garantie X ans".

Type 5: Administrative Form / Instructions (Formulaire administratif)

Structure:

  1. Purpose (What the form is for: Visa, Registration, Complaint).
  2. Required Documents (Pièces à fournir).
  3. Deadline (Date limite).
  4. Where to Submit (À envoyer à...).

Vocabulary:

  • Sous peine de rejet: Under penalty of rejection.
  • Pièces justificatives: Supporting documents.
  • Dûment rempli: Duly filled out.

Common Questions:

  • "Quels documents sont nécessaires ?" -> List all items under "Pièces à fournir".
  • "Où envoyer le formulaire ?" -> Address or email.

Part 3: Advanced Tips

Tip 1: Beware of Synonyms

The question and the document might use different words for the same concept.

  • Question: "Quel est le salaire ?" (What is the salary?)
  • Document: "Rémunération: 2000€" (Remuneration).
  • Match: Salaire = Rémunération.

Tip 2: Numbers Are Your Friends

If a question asks for a number (price, date, time), your eyes should JUMP to every digit in the document.

  • Question: "Combien coûte l'entrée ?"
  • Scan: 10€, 5€ (réduit), Gratuit pour -12 ans.
  • Answer: Depends on the specific sub-question.

Tip 3: Negations Are Traps

  • Document: "Aucune expérience requise." (No experience required).
  • Question: "L'expérience est-elle obligatoire ?"
  • Answer: Non (No).
  • Trap: Students see "expérience" and think "Yes". Read carefully!

Conclusion

Section B rewards speed and precision, not deep comprehension. You are a detective hunting for clues, not a student trying to understand philosophy. Train yourself to recognize the 5 document types in 3 seconds, read questions first, and use the SCAN method religiously.
