TCF Writing Task 3: The Argumentative Comparison Blueprint

Task 3 of the TCF Canada Writing section is the "Final Boss."

You are given two short texts expressing different viewpoints on a social topic (e.g., "The merits of homework" vs. "The case against it"). You have to:

1. Synthesize both points of view.
2. Express your own opinion and argue for it.

You have very little time (around 20–25 minutes recommended) and a strict word count (80–120 words for the synthesis and opinion). This is where most candidates fail: they either write too much and run out of time, or they fail to distinguish between the authors' opinions and their own.

1. The Synthesis: "Neutrality is Key"

In the first half of your Task 3 response, you must summarize the debate without taking a side.

The Golden Rule: Use reporting verbs and neutral connectors.

• L'un des textes soutient que... (One text maintains that...)
• À l'inverse, le second document souligne que... (Conversely, the second document highlights that...)
• Il s'agit donc d'un débat opposant [Side A] et [Side B].

Pro Tip: Avoid copying phrases from the text. Use synonyms. If the text says "travailler dur," you say "faire preuve de diligence."

2. The Transition: "The Pivot"

You need a clear bridge between the summary and your opinion.

• Quant à moi... (As for me...)
• Pour ma part, je rejoins l'avis de... (For my part, I agree with the opinion of...)
• Toutefois, j'estime que la réalité est plus nuancée. (However, I feel the reality is more nuanced.)

3. The Opinion: "Quality over Quantity"

You only have room for one strong argument. Don't try to list five reasons why you agree. Pick one and develop it using the PREP Formula: Point, Reason, Example, Point.

Example structure:

1. Point: I believe homework is beneficial.
2. Reason: It reinforces independent learning habits.
3. Example: Students who study at home perform 20% better in exams.
4. Point (Restate): Therefore, it remains a vital educational tool.

4. Vocabulary for Argumentation

To hit the C1/C2 level, you need to use words that show logical sophistication:

• Contradiction: Paradoxalement, Nonobstant, Bien que.
• Emphasis: Notamment, Précisément, Incontestablement.
• Consequence: Par voie de conséquence, Dès lors.

5. The "Final Polish" Checklist

Before you submit, check for these three things:

1. Subject-Verb Agreement: Did you use the plural for Ils/Elles?
2. Gender Matching: Is it La solution or Le solution?
3. The Subjunctive: Did you use at least one subjunctive phrase? (Il est nécessaire que nous fassions...)
