TCF Canada Speaking: The 3 Tasks Decoded for NCLC 7+

The TCF Canada Speaking section (Expression Orale) is a 12-minute sprint divided into three distinct tasks. Unlike the TEF, which focuses heavily on role-plays, the TCF tests your ability to move from personal anecdotes to practical problem-solving, and finally, to abstract debate.

To hit NCLC 7 (B2) or NCLC 9 (C1), you must understand the nuance of what the examiner is looking for in each segment. Here is the breakdown.

Task 1: The Personal Interview (2 minutes)

Goal: Prove you are comfortable in a spontaneous conversation about your life.

Examiners will ask about your hobbies, your work, or your reasons for moving to Canada.

  • Mistake: Giving one-word answers. ("Oui, j'aime le foot.")
  • Strategy: Use the "Answer + Detail" method.
    • "Oui, j'aime beaucoup le football. Je le pratique tous les dimanches avec des amis, ce qui me permet de décompresser après une longue semaine de travail."

You don't need complex grammar here, but you need natural flow.

Task 2: The Interaction (approx. 4 minutes)

Goal: Gather information in a simulated real-world situation.

This is similar to the TEF Section A but usually shorter and more dynamic. You might be asked to call a school to register your child or ask for directions at a tourist office.

  • Complexity Marker: Use inverted questions ("Pourriez-vous me dire ?") and conditional politeness ("Je souhaiterais...").
  • Flexibility: The examiner might throw an "imprévu" at you (e.g., "We are actually full this month"). You must react appropriately: "C'est fâcheux, y a-t-il une liste d'attente ?"

Task 3: The Argumentation (approx. 5 minutes)

Goal: Present an organized opinion on an abstract topic.

This is where the NCLC 9 is won or lost. You will be given a prompt (e.g., "Is technology destroying social relationships?"). You must:

  1. Introduce the topic and state your thesis.
  2. Provide two or three logical arguments with examples.
  3. Conclude by summarizing your point.

C1 Strategy: Use nominalization and concession.

  • Instead of: "Les gens utilisent trop leurs téléphones," try: "L'omniprésence des outils numériques engendre parfois un appauvrissement des interactions humaines directes."

Scoring Differentiators: B2 vs C1

How to Prepare for the TCF Speaking Blitz

The hardest part of the TCF is the switch. You go from talking about your favorite food (Task 1) to debating the ethics of AI (Task 3) in under 10 minutes. Your brain needs to be warmed up.

At PrepMyFrench.com, we provide TCF-specific speaking simulations. You record your 3-task cycle, and our AI Grader evaluates each task individually. You'll see exactly which task is pulling your average down—whether it's Task 2's politeness or Task 3's abstract vocabulary.
