SLE Written Expression Grammar Traps

Quick Answer

The SLE Written Expression test is multiple choice. You do not write an essay. You identify correct and appropriate written French in workplace-style sentences. The biggest traps are agreement, pronouns, prepositions, verb tense, register, and sentence logic.

Why the Test Feels Strange

Many candidates prepare for writing by practicing paragraphs. That does not match the SLE Written Expression format. The test asks whether you can recognize correct French quickly.

That means you need two skills:

1. Grammar accuracy.
2. Pattern recognition under time.

The wrong answer often sounds almost correct. Your job is to spot the small error.

Trap 1: Gender and Number Agreement

Look for adjective and past participle agreement.

Common trap:

“

Les nouvelles procedures sont important.

”

Correct:

“

Les nouvelles procedures sont importantes.

”

In workplace French, nouns such as procedure, politique, demande, equipe, and reunion appear often. Know their gender.

Trap 2: Prepositions After Verbs

French verbs do not use prepositions like English.

If two answers differ only by a or de, slow down.

Trap 3: Pronoun Placement

Written Expression often tests object pronouns.

Correct examples:

• Je vous enverrai le document demain.
• Nous leur avons explique la procedure.
• Elle s'en occupe cette semaine.
• Il faut le faire avant vendredi.

Watch compound tenses and infinitives. Pronouns move depending on the structure.

Trap 4: Verb Tense Logic

The correct answer must match the time relationship.

Examples:

• Hier, nous avons envoye le rapport.
• Demain, nous presenterons les resultats.
• Si nous avions plus de temps, nous pourrions verifier les donnees.

Conditionals are common in workplace recommendations: il faudrait, il serait preferable, nous pourrions.

Trap 5: Register

The SLE is a workplace test. Choose professional French.

Too casual:

“

Salut, peux-tu me filer le document ?

”

Better:

“

Bonjour, pourrais-tu m'envoyer le document ?

”

Register traps often appear when every answer is grammatically possible but only one fits a professional context.

Trap 6: Sentence Logic

Some answers are grammatically correct but illogical.

Example:

“

Bien que le rapport soit urgent, nous devons le remettre rapidement.

”

This is weak because the contrast connector "bien que" does not create a real contrast. A better sentence would be:

“

Comme le rapport est urgent, nous devons le remettre rapidement.

”

Connectors carry meaning. Do not choose them because they look advanced.

Use this routine:

1. Five minutes: review one grammar family.
2. Ten minutes: answer timed multiple-choice items.
3. Five minutes: rewrite each wrong answer as a rule.
