Analyzing a Real NCLC 7 TEF Speaking Role-play (What the Examiner Wants)
The biggest mystery for TEF Canada candidates is understanding exactly what the examiner is looking for in Expression Orale Section B.
You know you need to "convince your friend." But how hard should you push? How polite should you be? What happens when they say no?
To demystify the grading rubric, we are going to break down an excerpt of a successful NCLC 7 (B2) role-play. We will highlight the specific linguistic triggers that earn points and analyze how the candidate handles the examiner's "pushback."
The Scenario
Prompt: You saw an advertisement for a "Survival Weekend in the Forest" (no phones, foraging for food, building shelters). Call your friend (the examiner) and convince them to come with you this weekend.
The Transcript Analysis
The candidate has just introduced the idea. The examiner makes their first objection.
Examiner (Friend): "Un week-end de survie ? Tu rigoles ? Tu sais bien que je déteste les insectes et dormir par terre. C'est hors de question." (A survival weekend? Are you joking? You know I hate insects and sleeping on the floor. It's out of the question.)
B1 Level Response (The Mistake) ❌
Handling the "Brick Wall" Objection
Towards the end of the 10 minutes, the examiner is trained to give you a "brick wall" objection to test your composure.
Examiner (Friend): "Écoute, c'est très gentil à toi, mais je n'ai vraiment pas l'argent pour ça ce mois-ci. Ce n'est pas possible." (Look, it's very nice of you, but I really don't have the money for it this month. It's not possible.)
The NCLC 7 / B2 Level Response ✅
How to Manufacture This Level of Skill
Knowing these structures is easy. Executing them flawlessly when your adrenaline is pumping during a real exam is incredibly difficult.
You cannot script the entire 10 minutes because you don't know what the examiner will say. You must train your brain to retrieve these structures (Concession, Si Clauses) instantly.
Practice Against the Ultimate Opponent
If you want to practice handling these exact variations of objections, you need an adversary.
Candidates are flocking to PrepMyFrench.com to train for exactly this reason. The platform's AI Voice Simulator acts as the "stubborn friend." If you pitch a survival weekend, the AI will complain about the bugs. If you answer that, it will complain about the price.
