Subject Pronouns: The Who’s Who of French Sentences

Every sentence needs a subject. In French, the subject pronoun (le pronom sujet) doesn't just tell us who is doing the action, but it also carries information about social rank, number, and gender. For the TEF and TCF exams, choosing the right pronoun is the first step toward grammatical accuracy and sociolinguistic appropriateness.

1. The Singular Pronouns

Je (I)

Notice that "Je" is not capitalized unless it's the first word of a sentence.

  • Critical Elision: When "Je" is followed by a verb starting with a vowel, it becomes J'.
  • Example: J'habite à Montréal. (Not "Je habite").

Tu (You - informal)

Used for one person you know well (friends, family, children). In the TEF/TCF, use this only if the prompt says "Vous parlez à un ami" (You are speaking to a friend).

Il / Elle (He / She / It)

Everything in French has a gender. If you are talking about a table (la table), you call it Elle. If you are talking about a book (le livre), you call it Il.

On (One / We)

In modern spoken French, On has almost entirely replaced Nous when meaning "We."

  • Formal: Nous allons au restaurant.
  • Natural: On va au restaurant. Exam Tip: Using On in the oral exam sounds more natural and fluent, while Nous is better for formal writing.

2. The Plural Pronouns

Nous (We)

Used in formal writing and very formal speech.

Vous (You - formal or plural)

This pronoun is a double-threat. It is used for:

  1. Plural: More than one person (y'all / you guys).
  2. Formal (Vouvoiement): One person you address with respect. Crucial for TEF Section A: You must use Vous when speaking to the examiner or a professional contact in a roleplay.

Ils / Elles (They)

  • Ils: For a group of men or a mixed group of men and women. (The "masculine prevails" rule).
  • Elles: Only for a group that is 100% feminine.

3. Pronoun Placement and Stress

In addition to subject pronouns, French uses Stress Pronouns (pronoms toniques) for emphasis.

  • Moi (Me)
  • Toi (You)
  • Lui / Elle (Him / Her)
  • Soi (One)
  • Nous / Vous (Us / You)
  • Eux / Elles (Them)

Example of Emphasis:

  • Moi, je préfère le thé, mais lui, il aime le café.” (Me, I prefer tea, but him, he likes coffee).

4. Avoiding the "Empty Subject"

In English, we have sentences like "It is raining" or "There are people." In French, we use specific pronouns for these:

  • Il pleut (It's raining).
  • Il y a (There is/are).
  • C'est (It is).

Exam Pitfall: Don't confuse C'est and Il est.

  • Use C'est + Noun (C'est un prof).
  • Use Il est + Adjective (Il est intelligent).

5. Sociolinguistic Context (TEF/TCF)

Your choice of pronoun can determine your NCLC level.

Section A (TEF Orale):

You are calling a travel agency.

  • Wrong: “Tu travailles demain ?”
  • Right: “Est-ce que vous travaillez demain, Monsieur ?”

Section B (TEF Orale):

Choosing between Tu and Vous for your "friend." Stick to your choice throughout the conversation. Switching halfway through shows a lack of control.

6. Practice with PrepMyFrench

Getting pronouns right is about instinct.

AI Feedback:

When you use our Speaking Simulator, our AI analyzes your "Sociolinguistique" level. If you consistently use the wrong pronoun for the context (e.g., being too casual with a professional), your score for "Appropriate Register" will be lower.

Writing Correction:

Our AI Writing evaluation checks for pronoun-verb agreement. If you write Je vient instead of Je viens, the AI identifies the error in Morphosyntaxe.

Challenge: Start a TCF Writing Task 1 (Message to a friend) and focus on using Tu and On correctly. Then try a Task 2 (Letter to a Mayor) and switch entirely to Vous and Nous.

Conclusion

Pronouns are the anchors of your speech. They tell the listener who is doing what and how you relate to them. Mastering the nuances of Tu/ Vous and On/Nous is one of the fastest ways to sound like a sophisticated French speaker.
