Understanding Evaluation Criteria (NCLC): Decoding Your Score

If you are taking the TEF or TCF Canada for immigration purposes, the only score that really matters is your NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) level. Immigration Canada (IRCC) uses the NCLC scale (from 1 to 12) to award points for your permanent residency application. To reach the "Golden Level" of NCLC 7 (required for many programs), you need to prove a solid B2 proficiency.

In this guide, we break down what the examiners are actually looking for.

---

1. The Four Pillars of Evaluation

For the Speaking and Writing sections, examiners use four specific criteria:

A. Grammatical Correctness (Syntaxe et Morphologie)

• What they want: Varied tenses (), correct pronoun usage, and accurate verb endings.

2. The NCLC Equivalence Table (The Numbers)

Each exam (TEF vs TCF) has its own points-to-NCLC conversion.

• NCLC 7 (B2): Usually requires scoring roughly 70-75% on the exam.
• NCLC 9 (C1): Requires scoring 85%+.
• : Don't leave any answers blank in the Reading/Listening MCQ sections. Statistically, a random guess can move you from an NCLC 6 to an NCLC 7.

3. The "Implicit" Criteria: Fluency and Tone

In the Speaking exam, the examiner evaluates your Prosody:

• Flow: Avoid long "Euh..." silences.

4. Strategic Tips for High NCLC Scores

1. Self-Correction: If you make a mistake and immediately fix it (“J'ai allé... pardon, je suis allé”), you are NOT penalized. It actually proves you have high linguistic awareness.
2. Synthesis: In the final tasks of the Writing exam, demonstrate that you can synthesize complex ideas into a concise 200-word essay.
3. Pronunciation: You don't need a "French accent," but you do need Clarity. Focus on the nasal sounds and the "U" vs. "OU" distinction.
