If you’ve already reached CLB 7 (B2), congratulations—you’ve done the hard part. You are bilingual. However, the plateau between CLB 7 and CLB 9 (C1) is where many dreams of a high CRS score die.
Candidates often take the exam 3, 4, or even 5 times, consistently hitting NCLC 7 across the board but never breaking into that elite NCLC 9 bracket.
Why is this jump so difficult? It’s rarely about "not knowing enough French." It’s about bad habits and strategic misunderstandings.
1. The "Fluency Trap"
Many CLB 7 candidates speak very fast. They think speed equals fluency. However, at the C1 level, fluency is about flow, not speed. If you speak fast but make constant mistakes with gender (le vs la) or prepositions (à vs de), you are telegraphing to the examiner that you are still at the B2 level.
The Fix: Slow down. Precision is more important than speed for CLB 9. A C1 candidate speaks with distilled accuracy. Every sentence should be grammatically deliberate.
2. Fossilized Errors
By the time you reach B2, your brain has "locked in" certain mistakes. You might always say "Je suis fini" instead of "J'ai fini". Because people understand you, you stop self-correcting.
At the C1 level, these "fossilized errors" are unacceptable. The examiner expects a "high degree of control."
The Fix: Record yourself and transcribe your own speaking. You will be shocked at the repetitive, simple errors you make. Once you see them on paper, you can begin the conscious work of deleting them from your spoken French.

3. Lack of Lexical Range
CLB 7 candidates use "utility words."
- "Il y a beaucoup de problèmes." (There are many problems).
- "Le projet est bon." (The project is good).
A CLB 9 candidate uses "nuanced words."
- "Nous faisons face à une cascade de défis." (We are facing a cascade of challenges).
- "Le projet s'avère particulièrement pertinent." (The project proves particularly relevant).
If your vocabulary is generic, your score will be generic.
4. Poor Use of Concession and Logic
B2 candidates use direct logic: "A is true, because of B." C1 candidates use concessive logic: "While it is undeniably true that B is a factor, one must also consider that C provides a counter-narrative, which ultimately leads to A."
If you don't use words like "Certes", "Toutefois", "Nonobstant", and "En dépit de", you haven't yet reached the C1 "mastery" register.
