Speaking Task B: Persuasion Techniques for C1 (TEF Canada)

Published: January 9, 2026 | Category: TEF Canada | Read Time: 15 Mins

TEF Canada Speaking Task B is widely considered the most enjoyable yet challenging part of the exam. The Mission: You must convince a friend (the examiner) to do something they initially don't want to do. The Catch: The examiner will fight back with 3-4 specific objections.

To score CLB 9 (Advanced/C1) in this section, you cannot just list features. You must Argue, Adapt, and Persuade. You need rhetorical strategies, not just vocabulary lists.

This guide reveals the argumentative structures that top-tier candidates use to dismantle objections and win the debate.

1. The Dynamic of Task B

  • Context: Informal. You are talking to a friend. Use "Tu".
  • Time: 10 minutes (long!).
  • The Prompt: Usually a lifestyle change or purchase.
    • "Convince your friend to try skydiving."
    • "Convince your friend to adopt a stray dog."
    • "Convince your friend to replace their car with a bike."

The Trap: Most B1/B2 students just list pros. "It is good. It is cheap. It is fun." The C1 Student: Listens to the objection and reframes the reality.

2. The Golden Structure of Persuasion

Do not vomit arguments randomly. Structure your 10 minutes like a sales pitch.

Phase 1: The Hook (L'Accroche) - 1 Minute

Don't start with "Je veux te parler de..." (Testing mode). Start with an emotional hook.

  • "Salut Paul ! Je t'ai vu hier, tu avais l'air super stressé. J'ai pensé à toi parce que j'ai trouvé une solution incroyable pour décompresser..." (Create a need before offering the solution).

Phase 2: The Presentation (La Présentation) - 2 Minutes

Briefly explain the activity. Keep it exciting. Use adjectives.

Phase 3: The Debate (Le Débat) - 6 Minutes

This is the core. The examiner will raise objections (Money, Time, Danger, Interest). You must handle 3-4 distinct objections using the techniques below.

Phase 4: The Closing (La Conclusion) - 1 Minute

Summarize and ask for a commitment.

  • "Allez, on essaye juste une fois ? Je t'invite. Qu'est-ce que tu en dis ?"

3. Advanced Argumentation Techniques (C1 Level)

Here is how to handle objections like a pro.

Technique A: The "Yes, But" (Concession)

Never say "You are wrong." It's aggressive. Validate their feeling, then pivot.

  • Examiner: "C'est trop cher ! Je n'ai pas d'argent."
  • You (B2): "Non, ce n'est pas cher." (Bad)

Technique B: The "What If" (Personalization)

Make them visualize the benefit.

Technique C: The "Safety Net" (Reassurance)

Remove the risk.

  • Examiner: "J'ai peur de me blesser."
  • You: "C'est normal d'avoir peur. Mais ne t'inquiète pas, tout est encadré par des professionnels. On commence par le niveau débutant. Si tu ne le sens pas, on arrête tout de suite. Tu ne risques rien."

4. Key Vocabulary for Persuasion

These phrases signal C1 level syntax to the examiner.

To Introduce an Argument:

  • Il faut voir les choses en face… (Let's face facts...)
  • L'avantage principal, c'est que… (The main advantage is...)
  • Ce qui est génial, c'est que… (What's great is...)

To Counter an Objection:

  • Détrompe-toi ! (Think again / Make no mistake)
  • C’est une idée reçue. (That’s a misconception)
  • Au contraire... (On the contrary)

To Suggest/Propose:

  • Ça te dirait de… (Would you be up for...)
  • Pourquoi ne pas essayer de… (Why not try to...)
  • Ça vaudrait le coup de… (It would be worth it to...)
