Why the Synthese Fails Strong Candidates

Many C1 candidates already speak and write excellent French. They still fail the writing paper because they treat the synthese like a normal summary. The task has its own rules.

The examiner expects:

• a neutral tone
• no personal opinion
• no copied sentences
• no list of documents one after another
• a clear plan that groups ideas by theme
• a tight word count

The goal is not to prove you understood every detail. The goal is to prove you can transform several texts into one organized synthesis.

Step 1: Read for the Debate, Not for Details

On the first reading, ask one question: what debate links all the documents?

Examples:

• Should cities restrict cars?
• Does artificial intelligence improve education?
• Is remote work good for employees and companies?
• Can culture survive in a digital economy?

Write the central issue in one sentence. This sentence will guide the whole plan.

Step 2: Build a Two-Part or Three-Part Plan

Do not summarize Document 1, then Document 2, then Document 3. That is not a synthese. Instead, group ideas.

Common plans:

Your plan should be invisible but clear. The reader should feel the structure without seeing subtitles.

Step 3: Extract Only Transferable Ideas

Highlight ideas that can be reused in your plan. Ignore anecdotes unless they represent a broader point.

Weak note:

Strong note:

“

Some employers report higher productivity, but team cohesion can suffer.

”

The second note is transferable. It can enter a synthese paragraph.

Step 4: Reformulate Aggressively

The synthese penalizes copying. Train reformulation:

Reformulation is not synonym hunting. It is changing sentence structure while preserving meaning.

Step 5: Write a Neutral Introduction

Keep it short:
