Need CLB 7 (B2 level) for Canadian Permanent Residency? If you are currently at a "rusty high school French" level (A2/B1), you need about 3 months of focused, strategic prep.

Do not just "do Duolingo". It won't help you with the TEF format. Here is a week-by-week battle plan.


Month 1: Foundation (The Grammar & Input Phase)

Goal: Clean up your grammar and get your ear used to French speed.

  • Grammar: Focus on past tenses (Imparfait vs Passé Composé) and the Future tense. Using these incorrectly kills your score immediately.
  • Listening: 30 mins/day of Passive Listening. Use podcasts like InnerFrench (Intermediate) or Journal en français facile (RFI).
  • Writing: Write 2 simple paragraphs a day. Describe your day. Focus on specific connector words (D'abord, Ensuite, Enfin).

Month 2: Format Mastery (The Exam Phase)

Goal: Understand exactly what the TEF/TCF asks of you.

  • Speaking Task A: Memorize the 10 basic questions structure. (Who, What, Where, When, Price, Conditions). Practice asking questions about every ad you see on Facebook/Instagram.
  • Speaking Task B: Memorize the "Convincing" scripts. Learn how to say "I understand, but..." (Je comprends, mais...).
  • Reading: Start doing TIMED practice. Speed is key. Learn to scan for keywords.

Month 3: Simulation (The Stress Phase)

Goal: Build stamina and fix specific weaknesses.

  • Week 9-10: Do full-length mock exams. Sit down for 40 mins and do the Listening section without pausing. It is exhausting. You need to train your brain to focus for that long.
  • Week 11: Record yourself speaking. Listen to it. It will be painful, but you will hear your "Euh..." and your grammar mistakes clearly.
  • Week 12: Review your "Cheat Sheets" (Connectors, Subjunctive phrases). Relax the day before the exam.

Recommended Daily Routine (1 Hour)

  • 10 mins: Vocab flashcards (Anki).
  • 20 mins: Listening (Podcast) while commuting/cooking.
  • 30 mins: Active Study (Grammar exercise or Writing prompt).

Consistency beats intensity. 1 hour a day for 90 days > 10 hours once a week.
