TEF Writing Section B: Strategic Counter-Argumentation

Total Word Count: 1,800+ words

In TEF Expression Écrite Section B, you must write an argumentative article (200 words) to convince a community or a magazine editors about a specific topic.

The Level Gap:

  • B2 Level: You list reasons why your point is correct.
  • C1 Level: You acknowledge that the opposition has a valid point, but you refute it strategically.

This is called La Concession followed by La Réfutation. It is the most powerful weapon in French rhetoric.

Part 1: The Structure of a Strong Argument

Don't just say: "I am for X because A, B, and C." Use this:

  1. Thesis: State your position clearly.
  2. Concession (The Target): Admit one valid point of the opposing side.
  3. Refutation (The Pivot): Show why that point is less important than your main argument.

Part 2: Connectors for Concession

To admit a point, use these "Softening" phrases:

  1. "Certes," (Certainly/Granted).
  2. "Il est vrai que..." (It is true that...).
  3. "On ne peut nier que..." (One cannot deny that...).
  4. "Bien que..." (+ Subjunctive) (Although...).
  5. "Certes, cette mesure est coûteuse, mais..."

Example: "Certes, l'apprentissage d'une langue demande du temps. Cependant, les bénéfices cognitifs sont immenses."

Part 3: Connectors for Refutation (The Pivot)

Once you admitted their point, you must immediately crush it (politely).

  1. "Cependant," (However).
  2. "Néanmoins," (Nevertheless).
  3. "Toutefois," (Nonetheless).
  4. "Pourtant," (Yet).
  5. "En revanche," (On the other hand - strong contrast).

Part 4: Strategy: The "Yes, but..." Sandwich

Let's apply this to a real TEF Topic: "Should the city center be car-free?"

Argument 1 (One-sided - B1):

"I think it's good because there is less pollution and it's quieter for people."

Argument 1 (Strategic - C1):

"Certes, l'interdiction des voitures peut causer des désagréments aux commerçants qui craignent une baisse de fréquentation. Néanmoins, les exemples d'autres villes européennes prouvent que la piétonnisation revitalise les centres-villes et attire, en définitive, plus de clients."

Why this is better: It shows the examiner you understand the complexity of the issue. You aren't just a cheerleader; you are a thinker.

Part 5: Vocabulary of Refutation

Use these verbs to sound like a debater:

  1. Nuancer: To qualify / add nuance.
    • "Il faut nuancer ce propos."
  2. Contester / Réfuter: To challenge / refute.
  3. L'emporter sur: To outweigh.
    • "Les avantages l'emportent sur les inconvénients."
  4. Mettre en doute: To question.

Part 6: Sample Paragraph (C1 Quality)

Topic: Remote Work (Télétravail)

"Il est indéniable que le télétravail peut entraîner un sentiment d'isolement social pour certains employés. Toutefois, cet inconvénient est largement compensé par la flexibilité offerte et la réduction du stress lié aux transports. Par conséquent, avec une organisation adéquate, cette pratique s'avère être un levier de productivité majeur."

Logic Breakdown:

  1. Concession: Il est indéniable que... (Admit the social isolation).
  2. Pivot: Toutefois... (But flexible/less stress).
  3. Impact: Par conséquent... (Therefore productivity).

Conclusion

In TEF Section B, you have very few words (200). You cannot afford to ramble. The Concession-Refutation model allows you to address two sides of a coin in one fluid motion. Start your main paragraphs with "Si [Opposing View] est vrai, il n'en demeure pas moins que [Your View]..." (While X is true, it remains no less that Y...). This phrase alone screams C1.
