Published: January 9, 2026 | Category: TEF Canada | Read Time: 15 Mins
TEF Canada Speaking Task B is widely considered the most enjoyable yet challenging part of the exam. The Mission: You must convince a friend (the examiner) to do something they initially don't want to do. The Catch: The examiner will fight back with 3-4 specific objections.
To score CLB 9 (Advanced/C1) in this section, you cannot just list features. You must Argue, Adapt, and Persuade. You need rhetorical strategies, not just vocabulary lists.
This guide reveals the argumentative structures that top-tier candidates use to dismantle objections and win the debate.
1. The Dynamic of Task B
- Context: Informal. You are talking to a friend. Use "Tu".
2. The Golden Structure of Persuasion
Do not vomit arguments randomly. Structure your 10 minutes like a sales pitch.
Phase 1: The Hook (L'Accroche) - 1 Minute
Don't start with "Je veux te parler de..." (Testing mode). Start with an emotional hook.
- "Salut Paul ! Je t'ai vu hier, tu avais l'air super stressé. J'ai pensé à toi parce que j'ai trouvé une solution incroyable pour décompresser..." (Create a need before offering the solution).
Phase 2: The Presentation (La Présentation) - 2 Minutes
3. Advanced Argumentation Techniques (C1 Level)
Here is how to handle objections like a pro.
Technique A: The "Yes, But" (Concession)
Never say "You are wrong." It's aggressive. Validate their feeling, then pivot.
4. Key Vocabulary for Persuasion
These phrases signal C1 level syntax to the examiner.
To Introduce an Argument:
- Il faut voir les choses en face… (Let's face facts...)
- L'avantage principal, c'est que… (The main advantage is...)
5. Common Scenarios (Cheat Sheet)
Topic: Ecology (Stop driving, Eat Bio)
- Obj: Too expensive. -> Arg: Long term savings on health/gas.
- Obj: Convenience. -> Arg: Mental health, less stress in traffic.
Topic: Dangerous Sports (Parachuting, Bungee)
6. Conclusion
In Task B, Energy is as important as grammar. If you sound bored, you fail. Be enthusiastic. Be empathetic. Be relentless but charming. Treat the examiner like a real stubborn friend you love, and you will naturally find the right tone.
