SLE French Written Expression: Mastering the Multiple-Choice Traps
The SLE Written Expression multiple-choice section is not a test of how much French you know—it is a test of how well you spot the traps the examiners have built into every question. After working with hundreds of Government of Canada candidates, I have identified three recurring patterns that cause the most point loss: distractor pairs that look correct but are not, tense sequence violations that break the logic of a sentence, and pronoun agreement errors that hide behind seemingly simple choices. This article breaks down each pattern with real SLE-style examples and gives you a step-by-step strategy to eliminate wrong answers before you pick the right one. By the end, you will know exactly what to look for and how to avoid the most common mistakes that keep test takers from reaching their target level.
The Distractor Pair Trap: When Two Answers Look Right
The most common trap in the SLE Written Expression section is the distractor pair—two answer choices that are both grammatically possible but only one fits the specific context of the sentence. Examiners love this because it punishes candidates who rely on intuition rather than analysis.
Example:
“Il a terminé le rapport _____ il était très fatigué. A) bien que B) malgré C) quoique D) parce que
”
Here, A and C are near synonyms ( and both mean "although"), and B () is a preposition that also expresses concession. The trap is that all three could work in some sentences, but only one fits here. The key is that must be followed by a noun, not a clause with a conjugated verb. Since is a full clause, only or are possible. Between them, is slightly more formal and less common in SLE passages, but both could be correct. The real trick is that the sentence needs a subjunctive after : or . The indicative is incorrect after , so the only correct answer is actually none of the above—but in the real exam, the correct version would use the subjunctive. This is why you must check verb mood, not just meaning.
Tense Sequence Violations: The Logic of Time
The SLE test frequently includes sentences where the verb tenses must follow a logical sequence. The most common violation is mixing a past tense in the main clause with a present tense in the subordinate clause when the action of the subordinate happened earlier.
Example:
“Elle a affirmé qu'elle _____ déjà la décision. A) prend B) a prise C) avait prise D) prendra
”
The main verb is in the (past). The subordinate action () happened before the affirmation. In French, when the main verb is in a past tense, the subordinate verb must be in the to show anteriority. The correct answer is C) . Answer B () is a common distractor because it looks like a past tense, but it is the same tense as the main verb, which creates a logical error—you cannot take the decision at the same time as you affirm having taken it.
Pronoun Agreement Errors: The Hidden Gender and Number Trap
Pronoun agreement errors are especially dangerous because they often hide in long sentences where the antecedent is far from the pronoun. The SLE test frequently uses this to test your ability to track gender and number across a sentence.
Example:
“Les décisions que le comité a prises _____ ont été critiquées. A) les B) leur C) lui D) elles
”
The antecedent is (feminine plural). The pronoun must agree in gender and number. is a pronoun that would replace as the object of a verb, but here the sentence already has as the relative pronoun. The blank needs an pronoun referring to (masculine singular). The correct answer is C) because the decisions were taken (indirect object). Answer B () would be correct if the committee were plural, but it is singular. Answer A () is a distractor because it is plural and looks like it could replace , but the structure does not allow it.
The Preposition Maze: À, De, or Nothing?
Prepositions are a frequent source of traps because many French verbs require a specific preposition that does not match English intuition. The SLE test often includes sentences where the verb-preposition combination is the only thing being tested.
Example:
“Il a réussi _____ obtenir le poste. A) à B) de C) par D) (no preposition)
”
The verb can mean "to succeed" and is followed by when it means "to succeed in doing something": . However, can also be followed directly by a noun (). The trap is that many candidates remember but forget that when followed by an infinitive, the preposition is . Answer D (no preposition) is a common distractor because can be transitive with a noun, but not with an infinitive. The correct answer is A.
The Subjunctive Trigger: When Mood Changes Everything
The subjunctive is a classic SLE trap because many triggers are subtle. The test often uses verbs of emotion, doubt, or necessity that require the subjunctive, but the distractor answers use the indicative.
Example:
“Il est important que tu _____ à l'heure. A) arrives B) arriveras C) es arrivé D) sois arrivé
”
The trigger requires the subjunctive. Answer A () is the present subjunctive of , so it is correct. Answer B is the future indicative, answer C is the indicative, and answer D is the subjunctive past but implies the action is already completed, which does not fit the context of a general importance. The trap is that many candidates see and think it is the present indicative because it looks identical, but for -er verbs, the subjunctive and indicative are the same for and . The test exploits this by using verbs where the forms differ, like or .
The False Cognate Trap: Words That Look Familiar but Are Not
False cognates are words that look like English words but have different meanings. The SLE test sometimes includes them as distractors because they seem logical to an English speaker.
Example:
“Le nouveau logiciel a été _____ par l'équipe. A) actually B) actuellement C) réellement D) en fait
”
The word looks like "actually" but means "currently" or "at the moment." The English word "actually" translates to or . Answer A is not a French word (it is English), so it is immediately wrong. Answer B is a false friend that would mean "currently," which does not fit the context. The correct answer is C or D depending on the exact meaning, but the trap is that many candidates pick B because it looks familiar.
The Connector Confusion: Logical Connectors That Change Meaning
Connectors like cependant, néanmoins, pourtant, and toutefois all express contrast, but they are not always interchangeable. The SLE test often uses them in sentences where only one fits the logical relationship.
Example:
“Il a travaillé très dur; _____, il n'a pas obtenu la promotion. A) donc B) en effet C) pourtant D) ainsi
”
The Agreement with Collective Nouns: Singular or Plural?
Collective nouns like la majorité, la moitié, un groupe, or une foule can be tricky because they can be followed by a singular or plural verb depending on the meaning.
Example:
“La majorité des employés _____ satisfaite de la nouvelle politique. A) sont B) est C) être D) étaient
”
The Relative Pronoun Maze: Qui, Que, Dont, or Lequel?
Relative pronouns are a frequent source of traps because each one has a specific function. The SLE test often includes sentences where the wrong pronoun looks correct because it matches the gender and number of the antecedent.
Example:
“Le projet sur _____ nous travaillons depuis six mois est enfin terminé. A) qui B) que C) lequel D) dont
”
The verb is followed by the preposition (to work on). When the antecedent is a thing, the relative pronoun must include the preposition: . Answer A () is used for people or as a subject, answer B () is a , and answer D () means "of which" or "whose." The correct answer is C. The trap is that many candidates see (masculine singular) and think is too formal, but it is the only correct option here.

FAQ
Q: How many questions are in the SLE Written Expression multiple-choice section? A: The test typically includes around 45 to 50 multiple-choice questions, and you have 60 minutes to complete them. The exact number can vary by test version, but the format remains consistent.
Q: Can I skip questions and come back to them? A: Yes, the test allows you to navigate freely between questions. I recommend answering the ones you are sure of first, then returning to the harder ones. This prevents you from spending too much time on a single trap.
Q: Are there penalties for wrong answers? A: No, there is no penalty for incorrect answers. You should always guess if you are unsure, because a blank answer is always wrong. Use the elimination strategies in this article to increase your odds.
A: The best way is to work through practice tests that mimic the SLE format. Focus on identifying the trap patterns rather than just getting the right answer. Review each question you get wrong and categorize it by trap type.

Final Thoughts
The SLE Written Expression multiple-choice section is designed to test your ability to apply French grammar rules under time pressure. The key to success is not just knowing the rules but recognizing the patterns that examiners use to create traps. By categorizing each question into one of the patterns described above, you can systematically eliminate wrong answers and choose the correct one with confidence. Practice identifying distractor pairs, tense sequence violations, pronoun agreement errors, and the other traps until they become second nature. With consistent practice, you will find that the test becomes less about guessing and more about applying a reliable strategy.
