How to Use ChatGPT to Correct Your French (and when not to)

Published: January 9, 2026 | Category: Tips & Tricks | Read Time: 13 Mins

ChatGPT and Claude are powerful tools for language learners. They are free, instant, and knowledgeable. But standard prompts like "Correct my text" produces mediocre feedback. It fixes the errors but doesn't teach you why, nor does it simulate the TEF grading styles.

Here is the "Prompt Engineering" guide for French Immersion students.

1. The "Examiner" Persona Prompt

Don't ask it to be a teacher. Ask it to be an examiner.

The Prompt:

"Act as a strict, certified TEF Canada examiner. I need to achieve CLB 7 (B2+). I will paste an essay below.

  1. Give me a score out of 450 based on the official grid.
  2. List my 3 biggest grammar mistakes.
  3. Rewrite my text to upgrade it to C1 level, using advanced connectors and subjunctive, and bold the changes."

Why this works: It forces the AI to look for specific exam criteria (Structure, Vocabulary Range) rather than just spell-checking.

2. The "Vocabulary Expansion" Prompt

You often use the same words (beaucoup, important, dire).

The Prompt:

"Analyze my text. Identify 5 basic adjectives or verbs I used (like 'dire' or 'chose'). Provide 3 C1-level synonyms for each that fit the context of a formal letter."

  • Output: Instead of "dire", it might suggest "mentionner", "affirmer", "soutenir".
  • This builds your lexical range score.

3. The "Roleplay Partner" (Speaking Prep)

You can use ChatGPT (Voice Mode) to simulate Task A.

The Prompt:

"Let's roleplay TEF Speaking Task A. You are a real estate agent. I am calling about an apartment ad. You must be polite but slightly busy. Wait for me to ask a full question before answering. Keep your answers short. At the end, rate my politeness and syntax."

Why this works: It creates the "Interaction" pressure. You have to wait, listen, and respond.

4. When NOT to use AI

1. For Cultural Nuances (Slang/Verlan)

AI tends to speak "Standard Textbook French". It often sounds unnatural for casual "Tu" dialogues in Task B. It rarely uses realistic fillers (Ben, Bah, Genre) naturally unless forced.

2. Fact-Checking Exam Rules

Do not ask AI: "How many questions are in TEF Reading?" It often hallucinates outdated data (e.g., confusing TEF format with TCF). Always check the official PrepMyFrench or Chamber of Commerce guides for format.

3. As a replacement for Production

Reading an AI-corrected text is passive. You must rewrite the text yourself after seeing the correction. Muscle memory happens when you type/write the correct form, not when you read it.
