TCF Canada Speaking Task 2: Master the Art of Polite Inquiry

TCF Canada Speaking Task 2: Master the Art of Polite Inquiry
Published: March 17, 2026 | Category: TCF Canada | Read Time: 11 Mins
In the TCF Canada Speaking exam, Task 2 is a 4-minute simulated interaction where you are placed in a real-world scenario. You might be asked to call a tourist office, register for a course, or find an apartment.
While it sounds like a basic role-play, candidates often fail to hit an NCLC 7 (B2) or higher because they treat the interaction too much like a checklist of facts. To secure a high score, you must show Conditional Politeness and Interactive Flexibility.
Here is your guide to mastering polite inquiry for Task 2.
1. The Right Register: Standard vs. Formal
In Task 2, you are talking to a stranger (a clerk, a landlord, a receptionist). Therefore, you MUST use the "Vous" form. Using "Tu" is an automatic score reducer.
Politeness vs. Aggression
Don't demand information ("Combien ça coûte ?"). Instead, frame it softy.
| Direct (B1/Weak) | Polite (B2/C1/Strong) |
|---|---|
| Où se trouvent vos bureaux ? | Pourriez-vous m'indiquer la localisation de vos locaux ? |
| Je veux m'inscrire. | Je souhaiterais obtenir des renseignements sur la procédure d'inscription. |
| C'est cher ? | Quels sont les tarifs actuellement en vigueur ? |
2. Introduce with Context
Never ever start directly with a question. The examiner is testing your ability to create a natural dialogue flow.
The Golden Intro Formula:
- Greeting: "Bonjour, j'espère que vous allez bien."
- Context: "Je vous contacte car j'ai vu votre annonce concernant..."
- Objective: "Et je souhaiterais vous poser quelques questions pour avoir plus de détails."
This adds 15-20 seconds of high-level introductory French structure even before the interaction properly begins.

3. Handling the "Imprévu" (The Unexpected Response)
At some point during the call, the examiner will create a small obstacle to test your adaptability.
- Example: You ask for an apartment rental, and they say: "We actually require a 12-month deposit up front."
Candidates often freeze here.
The Elastic Responses Strategy:
- Surprise + Re-route: "Ah, c'est fâcheux... Est-il possible de payer en deux fois ?" (Ah, that is unfortunate... Is it possible to pay in two installments?)
- Acknowledge + Adapt: "Je comprends tout à fait votre politique. Y a-t-il une alternative ?" (I understand your policy perfectly. Is there an alternative?)
By staying in character and proposing a compromise, you demonstrate the exact reactive skill level expected of a B2/C1 speaker.
4. Logical Information Funneling
Don't ask 5 unrelated questions in rapid-fire succession. Funnel your questions from general to specific.
- Step 1: General logistics (Where, when?)
- Step 2: Pricing & Billing (Frais de dossier, methods, payment)
- Step 3: Prerequisites (Level, documents, preparation required)
- Step 4: The Next Step (How to proceed)
This structure ensures that you maintain control of the conversation, prevent awkward silences, and avoid repeats.

Practice Corner
The biggest obstacle in Task 2 is hesitation. If you stop for 5 seconds between questions, you lose points on fluency.
