Les Prépositions de Lieu & Temps: À, En, Dans, Chez

Introduction: The Prepositional Trap

In French, prepositions like À, En, Dans, and Chez are absolute minefields. They all translate roughly to "in," "at," or "to" in English, but using the wrong one breaks the structure weight of your sentence instantly.

  • Do you say "Je vais à la France" or "Je vais en France"?
  • Do you say "Je suis dans le bureau" or "Je suis au bureau"?

Small slips here happen at every level, from A2 up to C1. Examiners notice them immediately.

In this guide, we are going to give you the golden rules to never mix up place and time prepositions again.

Part 1: Prepositions of Place (Les Lieux)

1. Countries & Continents

The preposition depends on the gender of the country:

  • EN for Feminine countries (Ending in -e, like la France, la Chine) and ALL continents (en Asie, en Europe).
    • Example: Je vais **en** France.
  • AU for Masculine countries (Not ending in -e, like le Canada, le Japon).
    • Example: Je vais **au** Canada.
  • AUX for Plural countries (les États-Unis).
    • Example: Je vais **aux** États-Unis.

2. Cities (Use À)

Cities ALWAYS take are absolute À.

  • Example: J'habite **à** Paris. Je vais **à** Montréal.

3. Spaces vs. Concepts (Dans vs Au)

  • DANS means inside a physical box or contained space.
    • Example: Je suis **dans** la voiture. (Inside the car)
  • À (Au/À la) means an general location or attending an institution.
    • Example: Je suis **au** travail. (At work) Je vais **à la** piscine. (To the pool)

4. People's Homes or Businesses (Chez)

When going to a person or a professional office named after a person, use CHEZ.

  • Example: Je vais **chez** le médecin. (To the doctor's)
  • Example: Je vais **chez** Marie. (To Marie's house)

Part 2: Prepositions of Time (Le Temps)

When describing when or how long, choice matters:

1. DEPUIS (Since / For)

Use Depuis for an action that started in the past but is still happening now.

  • Example: J'étudie le français **depuis** trois ans. (I have been studying French for 3 years, and I still am).

2. PENDANT (During / For)

Use Pendant for a duration that is completed or independent of the present.

  • Example: J'ai dormi **pendant** huit heures. (I slept for 8 hours. Done).

Conclusion: Simple Check setup

  1. Is it a person? $\rightarrow$ Chez.
  2. Is it inside a room? $\rightarrow$ Dans.
  3. Is it a country? $\rightarrow$ Check the final letter for -e to use En vs Au.
