Si Clauses: The Three Hypothesis Structures You Must Know

Si Clauses (Les Hypothèses): The Three Structures You Must Know
Target: 1,850+ words
"If I study, I will pass." "If I studied, I would pass." "If I had studied, I would have passed."
These three sentences look simple in English. In French, they follow strict tense rules that you cannot break. Getting them wrong is one of the most common errors at B2 level.
Let's master all three hypothesis structures.
Part 1: The Golden Rule
NEVER put the conditional or future tense after "SI".
- ❌ "Si je viendrai..." (WRONG)
- ❌ "Si je viendrais..." (WRONG)
- ✅ "Si je viens..." (CORRECT)
This is the one rule that, if broken, immediately signals a non-native speaker.
Part 2: Structure 1 — Real/Possible Condition
SI + Présent → Futur Simple
This describes something likely or possible.
- "Si tu travailles, tu réussiras." (If you work, you will succeed.)
(If it rains, we'll stay home.)
(If I have time, I'll come see you.)
Variation: SI + Présent → Présent (for general truths / habits)
- "Si on chauffe l'eau à 100°C, elle bout." (If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.)
Variation: SI + Présent → Impératif (for instructions)
- "Si tu as faim, mange !" (If you're hungry, eat!)

Part 3: Structure 2 — Unreal/Hypothetical Condition (Present)
SI + Imparfait → Conditionnel Présent
This describes something unlikely, imaginary, or contrary to reality now.
- "Si j'étais riche, j'achèterais une villa." (If I were rich, I would buy a villa.)
- "Si tu travaillais plus, tu réussirais." (If you worked more, you would succeed.)
(If we had the choice, we would go on vacation.)
Key distinction: This is NOT about the past. It's about an imaginary present.
- "Si j'étais toi..." = If I were you (right now, hypothetically).
Part 4: Structure 3 — Unreal/Hypothetical Condition (Past)
SI + Plus-que-parfait → Conditionnel Passé
This describes something that DIDN'T happen in the past. It's the structure of regret.
- "Si j'avais étudié, j'aurais réussi." (If I had studied, I would have passed.)
(If you had come, you would have seen the show.)
- "Si nous avions su, nous serions restés." (If we had known, we would have stayed.)

Part 5: Summary Table
| Structure | SI + ... | Main Clause |
|---|---|---|
| Real (possible) | Présent | Futur Simple |
| Unreal (present) | Imparfait | Conditionnel Présent |
| Unreal (past) | Plus-que-parfait | Conditionnel Passé |
Part 6: Mixed Hypotheticals
Sometimes the condition is in the past but the result is in the present, or vice versa.
"Si j'avais étudié la médecine, je serais médecin aujourd'hui." (Si + PQP → Conditionnel Présent — past condition, present result)
"Si j'étais plus courageux, j'aurais parlé hier." (Si + Imparfait → Conditionnel Passé — present trait, past consequence)
These are fully correct, though less common.

Part 7: Other "If" Expressions
Même si (Even if) — Uses INDICATIVE
- NOT subjunctive. The "même" doesn't change the grammar.
- This is an exception: the conditional IS allowed here.
À condition que / Pourvu que (Provided that) — Uses SUBJUNCTIVE
- "J'accepte à condition que tu sois présent."
Part 8: Common Exam Traps
Using "si" + Conditionnel: "Si j'aurais su" ❌ → "Si j'avais su" ✅
- This is the number one error. Memorize: SI + NEVER Conditionnel/Futur.
Confusing Structures 2 and 3:
- Structure 2 = Imagining NOW: "Si j'étais riche..." (But I'm not.)
- Structure 3 = Regretting THE PAST: "Si j'avais été riche..." (But I wasn't.)
Forgetting agreement in Conditionnel Passé:
- "Elle serait partie" (not "elle aurait parti" — partir uses être).

Part 9: Practice Transformation
Transform these sentences:
- "Tu n'as pas étudié. Tu as échoué."
Conclusion
The three Si clause structures are the backbone of hypothetical thinking in French. They test your command of tense systems (Présent, Imparfait, Plus-que-parfait, Futur, Conditionnel Présent, Conditionnel Passé). Master these and you show the examiner that you can express possibility, imagination, and regret with precision. That's C1-level grammar in action.
