Your Express Entry Score vs. Your French Score: The Number Most Candidates Get Wrong

In the world of Canadian immigration, there is a number that keeps thousands of people awake at night: The CRS Cutoff.

You check the latest Express Entry draw results. The score is 525. You look at your profile. You are at 485. You feel like you're shouting into a void, waiting for a "general" draw that may never come, or for the cutoff to miraculously drop by 40 points.

But there is a second number that is far more important, and it’s the one most candidates get wrong. It’s the ROI of your French score.

At PrepMyFrench, we help candidates realize that French is not just a language—it is the most undervalued "currency" in the Express Entry system. Here is the math of why your French score is the literal key to your PR.

The Math of the "French Bonus"

Most people know that speaking French gives you "some points." But they don't realize the explosive nature of the points once you hit specific thresholds.

1. The Direct Bonus Points (30 to 50)

If you score NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking):

  • If you have English results (CLB 4 or lower): You get 25 bonus points.
  • If you have English results (CLB 5 or higher): You get 50 bonus points.

Think about that. In a system where people fight for 2 points from a year of work experience or 5 points from a sibling in Canada, 50 points is a nuclear weapon. It can take you from the "maybe" pile to the "guaranteed ITA" pile in one afternoon.

2. The Transferability Points (Up to 100)

This is where the math gets complex and where most candidates lose track. Your language scores also act as a multiplier for your education and work experience. If you combine high language scores with a Master's degree or foreign work experience, you can unlock up to 100 additional points in the "Skills Transferability" section.

CLB 7 vs. CLB 9: The $50,000 Gap

We often hear candidates say, "I just need a CLB 7 (NCLC 7) to get the bonus."

While NCLC 7 is the threshold for the bonus, reaching NCLC 9 is where you become "Immigration Royalty."

  • CLB 7: Good. You get the 50 points.
  • CLB 9: Excellent. You maximize your transferability points.

The gap between CLB 7 and CLB 9 in a typical profile is often around 20-30 points. In 2026, those 30 points are the difference between waiting 2 years for a provincial nomination and getting a direct federal ITA in 2 weeks.

If you value your time in Canada at a conservative $50,000 salary, every month you spend waiting is costing you money. Reaching CLB 9 is the highest ROI investment you will ever make.

The "Category-Based" Secret

Beyond the points, there is the French-Language Proficiency Category. IRCC now conducts specific draws for people who have NCLC 7 in French. These draws often have cutoffs that are 60 to 100 points lower than general draws.

  • General Draw Cutoff: 530+
  • French Category Cutoff: 440 - 470 (Historical range)

If you are at a 460 CRS, a general draw is impossible for you. But with a French NCLC 7, you are suddenly the top 1% of candidates. You aren't just "competing"; you are being "hunted" by IRCC.

The "I'm Too Old" or "I Lack Canadian Experience" Myth

We see candidates in their late 30s or early 40s who feel they have "lost" the Express Entry game because of age points. French is the Great Equalizer. A 40-year-old with NCLC 9 French will beat a 25-year-old with a Master's degree and perfect English every single time. French is the only factor in the CRS that can completely override the penalty of age.
