What is a Good TEF Score? Decoding CLB Levels for Express Entry

“
📋 Quick Answer: What is a good TEF Canada score?

A "good" TEF score depends entirely on your goal. For Express Entry maximum CRS points: NCLC 7 (CLB 7) in all four sections — roughly 249+/360 Listening, 207+/300 Reading, 225+/450 Writing, 181+/360 Speaking. For Canadian citizenship: NCLC 4 (CLB 4) — much more achievable. For : B2 level in Speaking + Listening. and is the threshold most Express Entry candidates target. Below CLB 7, you lose the 25-point French-language bonus entirely — the gap between CLB 6 and CLB 7 is the single highest-leverage improvement in French exam prep.

When you receive your TEF Canada results, you’ll see a series of numbers (e.g., 250/360, 410/699). But for most candidates, these numbers are confusing. You want to know: Is this a "good" score? Will this get me into Canada?

In the world of Canadian immigration, a "good" score is defined by how many points it adds to your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) profile.

Here is the breakdown of what constitutes a "good" TEF score in 2026.

1. The Threshold: CLB 7 (The "Entry" Good Score)

For most Express Entry candidates, the absolute minimum "good" score is a CLB 7 (NCLC 7) in all four categories.

Why? CLB 7 is the threshold required to qualify for the French-Language Proficiency category-based draws. These draws often have significantly lower CRS cut-off scores than general draws.
The TEF Scores for CLB 7:
- Reading: 207 - 232
- Listening: 249 - 279
- Writing: 310 - 348
- Speaking: 310 - 348

2. The Gold Standard: CLB 9 (The "Game Changer")

If you are looking for the maximum possible boost to your score, a CLB 9 is the ultimate "good" score.

Why? Under the "Skill Transferability" factors of Express Entry, having a CLB 9 in French (combined with a degree and work experience) can trigger a massive bonus of up to 50 points, even if you already have a high English score.
The TEF Scores for CLB 9:
- Reading: 263 - 277
- Listening: 298 - 314
- Writing: 371 - 392
- Speaking: 371 - 392

3. The Citizenship Score: CLB 4

If you are already in Canada and are applying for Citizenship, a "good" score is much lower. You only need a CLB 4 in Speaking and Listening.

Reading and Writing are not required for citizenship.

4. What if you get a "Bad" score in one section?

This is a common frustration. You might get CLB 10 in three sections but a CLB 6 in Listening.

The Reality: In Express Entry, your "category eligibility" depends on your lowest score. If you have 10-10-10-6, you do not qualify for the French-specific draws until you pull that 6 up to a 7.
The Strategy: Don't focus only on your strengths. A "good" overall result is a balanced result.

How to move from a "Fair" score to a "Good" score?

Most candidates sit in the CLB 5 or 6 range. To move into the "Good" range (CLB 7+), you need to focus on:

Grammar Precision: At CLB 7+, examiners stop looking for "meaning" and start looking for "accuracy." Minor errors in gender or tense can hold you back.
Complex Structures: You must use the subjunctive, relative pronouns (dont, lequel), and varied connectors (toutefois, néanmoins).
Speed: In the reading section, a "good" score requires you to finish all 50 questions. Most people fail because they run out of time on the Section C sentence insertions.

Conclusion: Define Your "Good"

Before you start studying, check your current CRS score.

If you are 20 points away from the cut-off, a CLB 5 might be a "good" score for you.
If you are 100 points away, only a CLB 9 will do.
