Tourism and Sightseeing: Exploring French Heritage
Whether it’s the Eiffel Tower or the historic district of Old Quebec, tourism is a major industry in the Francophone world and a frequent topic in the TEF and TCF exams. You might have to describe a monument in TCF Speaking Section A, write a blog post about a trip in TCF Writing Task 1, or call a museum about opening hours in TEF Speaking Section A.
In this guide, we master the vocabulary of sightseeing and cultural exploration.
1. Core Tourism Concepts
- Le tourisme: Tourism.
2. Navigating Attractions
- Une visite guidée: A guided tour.
3. Describing Places (Adjectives)
To score high, avoid just saying "Beau" or "Grand."
- Incontournable: Unmissable / Must-see.
- : Picturesque.
4. Cultural Activities
- Se balader / Se promener: To take a walk.
- Faire du lèche-vitrines: Window shopping.
- Assister à un spectacle: To attend a show.
5. Strategic Questions for a Tourist Office (TEF Section A)
6. Cultural Note: "Le Patrimoine" in France vs. Canada
France is famous for its "Journées du Patrimoine" in September, where historic buildings usually closed to the public (like the Élysée Palace) open their doors. In Canada, tourism often focuses on "Les Grands Espaces" (the great outdoors) and National Parks. Being aware of this shift from "Historic Art" to "Natural Wonders" shows your cultural adaptability.

Conclusion
Tourism is about sharing the best of a culture. In the TEF/TCF, talking about sightseeing allows you to show off your descriptive vocabulary and your ability to interact politely with service personnel. Use the terms in this guide to make your exam performance as memorable as an afternoon at the Louvre.
