The 4-Paragraph Master Template
If you want to secure a high score, do not reinvent the wheel. Use this strict 4-paragraph structure for every single Section B prompt.
Paragraph 1: The Introduction (40-50 words)
Your goal here is to reference the prompt, state why you are writing, and clearly announce your position (agree, disagree, or mixed).
The Template:
À l'attention de la rédaction,
Je me permets de vous écrire suite à la lecture de votre article consacré à [Insert Topic]. C'est un sujet qui suscite un vif débat au sein de notre société. En ce qui me concerne, je suis [totalement d'accord / en profond désaccord] avec l'opinion exprimée par l'auteur.
Paragraph 2: Your Strongest Argument (60-80 words)
This is where you bring out your best vocabulary. State your main argument and back it up with a concrete (even if fictional) example.
The Template:
D'une part, il est indéniable que [State your main argument]. En effet, [Explain the "why"]. À titre d'exemple, [Provide a specific example, e.g., a recent study or personal anecdote]. Par conséquent, il est primordial que les autorités prennent des mesures adéquates.
Paragraph 3: The Concession / Secondary Argument (60-80 words)
To get a CLB 9, you must show nuance. The best way to do this is through a "concession"—acknowledging the opposing side before validating your own point.
The Template:
D'autre part, je comprends parfaitement ceux qui affirmet que [State the opposing argument]. S'il est vrai que [Validate the opposing side slightly], cela ne doit pas justifier [State why they are ultimately wrong]. Bien au contraire, [State your secondary argument].
Paragraph 4: The Conclusion (30-40 words)
Summarize your position rapidly and sign off with a formal formula. This is the perfect place to use the subjunctive.
The Template:
En conclusion, bien qu'il soit (Subjunctive) difficile de trouver une solution parfaite, je suis convaincu(e) que [Summarize your stance]. Je vous remercie de m'avoir lu et espère voir ma lettre publiée dans vos prochaines colonnes.
Cordialement,
Un lecteur fidèle.
Essential Grammar for Section B
If you use the template above, you already have a great structure. To guarantee maximum points, inject these three grammatical elements:
Le Subjonctif: Use it at least twice. (Il faut que nous agissions, Bien qu'il y ait des risques).
Le Conditionnel: Use it to suggest solutions. (Il serait préférable de..., On devrait plutôt...).
Advanced Connectors: Replace mais with cependant or néanmoins. Replace aussi with de surcroît or par ailleurs.
