TCF Writing Task 1: Formal & Informal Email Master Templates

TCF Writing Task 1: Formal & Informal Email Master Templates
Writing Task 1 of the TCF Canada exam is your first impression on the examiner. You are asked to write a short message of 60 to 120 words.
The prompt will ask you to write either:
- An informal email/message to a friend or family member (e.g., inviting them to a party, giving advice, or describing a new apartment).
- A formal email/message to a colleague, manager, or business (e.g., asking for information, canceling a reservation, or requesting leave).
While 60–120 words seems short, candidates frequently lose points by mixing formal and informal registers (e.g., using "Tu" with a manager or "Veuillez agréer" with a best friend).
Here are the master templates for both registers, designed to secure maximum points on Task 1.
1. The Informal Email Master Template (To a Friend)
Use this template whenever the prompt says "écrivez à un(e) ami(e)" or "écrivez à un membre de votre famille".
The Structure & Rules:
- Always use "Tu" (never "Vous").
- Use warm, casual salutations.
- Ask a quick question about their well-being before diving into the prompt's task.
The Master Template:
“Objet : [Short, lively subject line, e.g., Des nouvelles ! / Invitation anniversaire / Mon nouveau travail]
Salut [Prénom],
Comment vas-tu ? J'espère que tout se passe bien de ton côté !
Je t'écris parce que [State reason in 1 sentence, e.g., j'ai enfin emménagé dans mon nouvel appartement]. [Answer Question 1 from the prompt, 2 sentences]. De plus, [Answer Question 2 from the prompt, 2 sentences].
[Call to action / Question to friend, e.g., Ça te dirait de passer me voir samedi soir ?]
Tiens-moi au courant vite !
Bises, [Your First Name]
”
Full Informal Example: "Invite a friend to visit your new city"
Word Count: 94 words
“Objet : Viens me voir à Montréal !
Salut Lucas,
Comment vas-tu ? J'espère que tu passes un excellent début de semaine !
Je t'écris parce que je suis enfin installé dans mon nouveau quartier à Montréal. L'appartement est super spacieux et très lumineux, juste à côté d'un grand parc. La vie ici est vraiment animée et il y a d'excellents restaurants à découvrir.
Ça te dirait de venir passer un week-end à la maison le mois prochain ? Je pourrais te faire visiter la ville !
Tiens-moi au courant vite !
Bises, Thomas
”
2. The Formal Email Master Template (To a Business or Colleague)
Use this template whenever the prompt says "écrivez à un responsable", "écrivez à une agence", or "écrivez au service client".
The Structure & Rules:
- Always use "Vous" and conditional polite tenses (Je voudrais, J'aimerais, Pourriez-vous).
- Never use slang or abbreviations.
- End with an appropriate formal closing (shortened for email format).
The Master Template:
“Objet : [Clear, professional subject line, e.g., Demande de renseignements / Annulation de réservation / Candidature]
Madame, Monsieur, OR Chère Madame / Cher Monsieur [Last Name],
Je me permets de vous contacter concernant [State the reason clearly in 1 sentence].
En effet, [Explain the context or issue, 2 sentences answering prompt detail 1]. Par conséquent, je vous serais reconnaissant(e) de bien vouloir [Request action or information, answering prompt detail 2].
Dans l’attente de votre retour, je vous remercie par avance pour votre aide.
Cordialement, [Your First and Last Name]
”
Full Formal Example: "Request information from a language school"
Word Count: 98 words
“Objet : Demande de renseignements - Cours de français intensifs
Madame, Monsieur,
Cordialement, Marie Moreau

Why Word Count Precision Matters
TCF Canada penalties for writing under 60 words or over 120 words in Task 1 are strict. Even if your grammar is perfect, an over-length email can drop your score.
With PrepMyFrench, you can practice writing Task 1 emails in a timed, exam-style interface. Our AI evaluator counts your words, checks your register consistency (tu vs. vous), and gives you an instant Canadian CLB benchmark score.
