SLE vs TEF vs TCF: Which French Exam Do You Actually Need?

With three major French proficiency exams circulating in Canada—the SLE, the TEF Canada, and the TCF Canada—it is no wonder that candidates get confused about which test they actually need to take.

The answer depends entirely on your goal: Are you trying to immigrate to Canada? Get a federal government job? Prove your French level for a university? Each exam serves a different purpose, and taking the wrong one wastes your time and money.

Here is the definitive breakdown.

Your Goal	Exam You Need
Canadian Permanent Residency (Express Entry)	TEF Canada OR TCF Canada
Canadian Citizenship	TEF Canada OR TCF Canada
Federal Public Service job (bilingual position)	SLE
Canadian Armed Forces bilingual posting	SLE
Quebec immigration (PEQ, QSWP)	TCF Québec (different from TCF Canada!)
French university admission	TCF tout public, DELF B2, or DALF C1
General proof of French proficiency	Any of the above, depending on the requesting institution
