You Passed Your French Exam. Now What? The Complete PR Application Checklist

Congratulations! The hard part is over. You’ve conquered the TCF or TEF Canada, received your NCLC 7 (or 9!), and you can finally see the finish line of your Canadian immigration journey.

But as any successful immigrant will tell you, the score is just the beginning. Now comes the administrative "marathon": the actual Permanent Residency (PR) application.

A single mistake on your Express Entry profile or your post-ITA (Invitation to Apply) application can lead to a rejection and months of delays. At PrepMyFrench, we want to make sure you finish the race strong. Here is your complete, post-exam PR application checklist for 2026.

Phase 1: The "Immediate Action" Items (Post-Score)

Once you have your official TEF or TCF results, do not wait. Your results are valid for 2 years, but the Express Entry pool is moving fast.

1. Update Your Express Entry Profile

Log into your IRCC account immediately. You will need:

  • Test Result Form (TRF) Number: This is the long alphanumeric code on your certificate.
  • Date of Test: The date you actually sat the exam, not the date the results were issued.
  • Module Scores: Enter your raw scores and NCLC equivalents exactly as they appear.

Important: Even a minor typo in the TRF number can lead to an "Ineligible" profile or, worse, a ban for misrepresentation if discovered later.

2. Recalculate Your CRS Score

Now that you have your official French score, use a 2026 CRS Score Calculator to see your new rank. If you hit NCLC 7, verify that the 50-point bonus has been applied correctly.

Phase 2: Document Readiness (Before the ITA)

The moment you receive your ITA, you only have 60 days to submit your complete application. Some documents can take months to acquire. Start gathering these today.

1. Police Clearance Certificates (PCC)

You need a PCC from every country where you have lived for 6 months or more since the age of 18.

  • The Trap: Some countries (like the FBI in the US or certain regional police in India) can take 4-8 weeks to process requests. Do not wait for the ITA to request these.

2. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

If you haven't already, ensure your foreign degrees are evaluated by an approved body (like WES or ICAS). If you are claiming points for a spouse’s education, they need an ECA too.

3. Proof of Funds (POF)

Unless you are authorized to work in Canada AND have a valid job offer, you must show you have enough money to settle.

  • The Check: Ensure your bank letters meet the specific IRCC requirements: account opening date, current balance, and average balance for the last 6 months. Large, "lump-sum" deposits right before the application will trigger an audit.

Phase 3: The Post-ITA Sprint

You’ve received the email. You have the Invitation to Apply. Now the clock is at 60 days.

1. The Medical Exam

You must visit a Panel Physician approved by IRCC.

  • Tip: Book this as soon as you get the ITA, as slots fill up quickly in major cities like Toronto, Dubai, or Mumbai.

2. Employment Reference Letters

This is the #1 reason for "Return as Incomplete" rejections. Your letters must include:

  • Official company letterhead.
  • Start and end dates.
  • Total hours per week.
  • Detailed list of duties (These must match the lead statement of your chosen NOC code).

Pro Tip: If your employer won't provide a detailed letter, you will need a sworn affidavit and supporting evidence (pay stubs, tax records).

Phase 4: The "French Category" Advantage

If you are applying under the French-Language Proficiency Category, IRCC will be paying close attention to your language consistency.

Keep your PrepMyFrench account active! Why? Because even after you get your PR, you will move to a new country where you may need to work in a bilingual environment. Mastering the language doesn't end with the test—it's your survival tool for your new life in Canada.

Conclusion: The Final Mile

Immigration is a game of precision. You have already shown you have the discipline to master a new language and pass a difficult exam. Now, apply that same discipline to your paperwork.

  1. Check your dates.
  2. Verify your NOC codes.
  3. Ensure your digital uploads are clear and legible.

You are closer to your life in Canada than you have ever been. Don't let a missing document stand in your way.
