Office and Professional Communication: The Art of the Courriel
In a professional environment, your ability to communicate via email (courriel in Quebec, e-mail or mél in France) is a primary indicator of your language level. For the TEF and TCF exams (especially TCF Writing Task 1 and 2), you must be able to switch between casual communication with a colleague and formal requests to a superior.
In this guide, we master the structure, vocabulary, and "codes" of French professional correspondence.
1. Anatomy of a Professional Email
- L'expéditeur: The sender.
- Le destinataire: The recipient.
2. Salutations: Getting the Tone Right
Very Formal (To someone you don't know):
- Monsieur / Madame,
- À l'attention de Monsieur le Directeur,
Professional / Neutral (Standard):
3. The Opening Sentence
Avoid starting with "How are you?" in very formal emails. Instead, state your purpose:
- “Je vous contacte au sujet de...”: I am contacting you regarding...
- : Following our meeting this morning...
4. Common Professional Verbs and Phrases
- Envoyer: To send.
5. Formal Closings (Les Formules de Politesse)
This is where many candidates lose points.
Very Formal:
- “Je vous prie d'agréer, Monsieur/Madame, l'expression de mes salutations distinguées.” (The classic "gold standard").
- “Dans l'attente de votre réponse, je vous prie d'agréer...”
Professional / Standard:
6. Strategic Vocabulary for TCF Writing Task 2
In TCF Task 2, you might have to write a formal request (e.g., asking for a leave of absence).
- “Je sollicite votre bienveillance pour...” (I request your kindness/approval for...).
- “Je me tiens à votre entière disposition pour un entretien.” (I remain at your full disposal for an interview).

Our AI Writing evaluation checks your "Registres de langue." If you use "Salut" in a formal letter to a Mayor, the AI will explain why it's inappropriate and suggest "Monsieur le Maire."

Conclusion
Professional communication is 50% language and 50% protocol. By mastering the fixed phrases and salutations in this guide, you decrease your cognitive load, allowing you to focus on the technical content of your message. This "automaticity" is exactly what TEF/TCF examiners are looking for at the B2/C1 levels.
