Part 1: What Are Discourse Markers?

Discourse markers are words or phrases that:

• Introduce an idea: "D'abord..."
• Connect ideas: "De plus..."
• Contrast ideas: "En revanche..."
• Conclude: "En somme..."

They tell the listener: "Here's what I'm about to do with my argument."
