Food and Drinks: Dining with Fluency

In French-speaking cultures, food is not just sustenance; it’s a form of art and social bonding. Whether you are ordering a "croissant" in a Parisian café or discussing dining habits in a TCF Speaking Section A, mastering food vocabulary is essential. In the context of the TEF/TCF, this topic often appears in roleplays (ordering at a restaurant) or in comprehension audios about gastronomy or health.

Let’s dive into the vocabulary that will help you navigate a French menu and interact with waitstaff.

---

1. Meals and Timing (Les Repas)

• Le petit-déjeuner: Breakfast.
• Le déjeuner: Lunch.
• Le goûter: Snack (usually late afternoon).

2. Navigating the Menu (La Carte)

• La carte: The full menu selection.

3. Ordering at a Restaurant (Commander)

Key Phrases:

• Je voudrais...: I would like...
• Je vais prendre...: I will take...

4. Drinks and Beverages (Les Boissons)

• L'eau plate / L'eau gazeuse: Still water / Sparkling water.
• : A jug of tap water (usually free in France).

5. The End of the Meal: L'Addition

• L'addition, s'il vous plaît: The bill, please.
• Le pourboire: The tip. (In France, service is included, but a small tip for good service is appreciated. In Canada, tipping 15-20% is mandatory).
• Payer par carte / en espèces: Pay by card / in cash.

6. Dietary Restrictions and Allergies

In an exam roleplay, adding a "constraint" like an allergy shows a higher level of language control.

• Je suis allergique aux arachides: I am allergic to peanuts.
• Je ne mange pas de viande: I don't eat meat.

7. Strategic Vocabulary for TEF/TCF

Listening:

You might hear a dialogue where a customer complains about their order. Listen for words like trompé (mistaken), froid (cold), or renvoyer (to send back).

8. Putting it into Practice: TCF Task 1 Writing

Write a 60-word email to a friend inviting them to a "nouveau resto." “Salut ! Ça te dit d'aller déjeuner demain ? J'ai testé une super brasserie. Leurs plats sont succulents et l'ambiance est top. Dis-moi si tu es libre !”
