1. F - Fausses Promesses (The App Trap)

This is the most common pitfall for beginners.

• The Mistake: You spend 45 minutes a day on Duolingo or Babbel, achieving a 100-day streak. You feel like you are making progress because the app tells you that you are.
• The Reality: Language apps are excellent for basic A1/A2 vocabulary acquisition. However, they cannot teach you how to write a formal argumentative letter (TEF Section B) or debate a sociological issue in real-time (TCF Task 3).
• The Solution: Delete the apps once you reach A2. To hit C1, you must read real French news (Le Monde, Le Figaro), listen to real French radio (RFI), and write real essays.

2. A - Attente Passive (The Silent Student Trap)

You can understand 90% of a French podcast. You can read a French novel. But when it's time to speak, you freeze.

• The Mistake: You spend 90% of your study time on "input" (reading and listening) and only 10% on "output" (speaking and writing).
• The Reality: The Listening and Reading exams are passive. The Speaking and Writing exams require active neural pathways that can only be built through repetitive, physical practice.
• The Solution: You must force yourself to speak out loud for at least 30 minutes every single day. Talk to yourself in the mirror, record voice notes on your phone, or join a live speaking class. Silence is the enemy of a CLB 9.

3. I - Incohérence Grammaticale (The Advanced Vocabulary Trap)

Many candidates believe that simply memorizing a list of C1 vocabulary words will trick the examiner into giving them a high score.

• The Mistake: You use a complex transition word like Néanmoins (Nevertheless), but the rest of your sentence has incorrect verb conjugations and basic preposition errors.
• The Reality: Examiners grade holistically. If you use elite vocabulary but your core grammatical structure (tenses, gender, prepositions) is broken, the examiner will penalize you heavily for lack of cohesion. It sounds unnatural.
• The Solution: Master the basics first. A flawlessly executed B2 grammatical structure will score higher than a broken C1 sentence. Ensure your Passé Composé and Imparfait are perfect before attempting the Plus-que-parfait.
