TEF/TCF Canada: Mastering Essential Connectors (Mots de Liaison)

TEF/TCF Canada: Mastering Essential Connectors (Mots de Liaison)
If you ask any TEF or TCF examiner what differentiates a B1 candidate from a C1 candidate, their answer will almost always be the same: Les articulateurs logiques (Logical connectors).
You can have perfect pronunciation and excellent vocabulary, but if you connect your sentences using only et (and), mais (but), and parce que (because), your French will sound elementary. Connectors are the glue that holds complex thoughts together. They organize your speech, guide the examiner through your arguments, and instantly elevate your language register.
Here is the ultimate cheat sheet of C1-level connectors you must memorize for your speaking and writing exams.
1. To Add Information (Instead of "Et" or "Aussi")
When you want to add a second point to your argument, stop using aussi. Use these professional transitions to structure your body paragraphs:
- En outre (Furthermore / Moreover)
- Par ailleurs (Additionally)
- De surcroît (Moreover - Very formal, excellent for writing)
- Non seulement... mais aussi... (Not only... but also...)
Example: "Le télétravail améliore la productivité. Par ailleurs, il permet de réduire le stress lié aux transports."
2. To Express Opposition (Instead of "Mais")
Opposing ideas is critical in both the TEF roleplay and the TCF debate. Mais is fine, but these connectors show nuance and sophisticated grammar.
- Cependant / Toutefois / Néanmoins (However / Nevertheless)
- En revanche (On the other hand)
- Par contre (On the contrary - Slightly less formal, good for speaking)
- Bien que + Subjonctif (Even though / Although)
Example: "Bien que cette solution soit (subjunctive) intéressante, elle coûte trop cher. Cependant, nous pourrions envisager une alternative."

3. To Express Cause (Instead of "Parce que")
Parce que answers the question "Why?". But in an essay, you want to sound analytical.
- En raison de + Noun (Due to)
- Étant donné que + Phrase (Given that)
- Grâce à (Thanks to - for a positive cause)
- À cause de (Because of - for a negative cause)
- Puisque (Since - when the cause is already known to the listener)
Example: "En raison de la crise économique, beaucoup d'entreprises ferment."
4. To Express Consequence (Instead of "Donc")
When drawing a conclusion from an argument, donc (so/therefore) is standard. Elevate it with these alternatives:
- Par conséquent (Consequently)
- C'est la raison pour laquelle (That is the reason why)
- Ainsi (Thus)
- Dès lors (From then on / Consequently)
Example: "Les transports en commun sont saturés. C'est la raison pour laquelle nous devons encourager le covoiturage."

5. To Structure a Sequence (Instead of "Premièrement, Deuxièmement")
When listing points, especially in TCF Task 3 or TEF Section B, you need signposts.
- D'une part... d'autre part... (On the one hand... on the other hand...)
- Tout d'abord (First of all)
- Ensuite (Then / Next)
- En fin de compte (Ultimately / In the end)
How to Practice Connectors
Do not try to memorize all of them at once. Pick two from each category. Write them on a post-it note and stick them to your monitor. Every time you practice a speaking roleplay or write a practice essay on PrepMyFrench, force yourself to use those specific connectors.
Within two weeks, par ailleurs and cependant will become natural reflexes, and your TEF/TCF score will automatically jump to the next CLB level.
