TEF Canada Speaking Section A: The "Q-U-I-Z" Questioning Framework

TEF Canada Speaking Section A: The "Q-U-I-Z" Questioning Framework
Section A of the TEF Canada Speaking exam (Expression Orale) is a formal information-gathering exercise. You are given a classified ad (for a job, an apartment, a service, etc.) and you have 5 minutes to ask questions to the examiner, who plays the role of the advertiser.
To achieve a CLB 9+ (NCLC 9), you must demonstrate extreme politeness, formal sentence structures, and a wide variety of interrogative pronouns. If you just ask "C'est combien ?" and "C'est où ?", you will barely score a CLB 5.
You need a systematic way to generate 10 to 12 formal questions without freezing. To do this, use our Q-U-I-Z Questioning Framework.
The Q-U-I-Z Framework
The Q-U-I-Z framework provides a roadmap for your 5-minute formal interview. It ensures you cover all grammatical bases and maintain the "Vous" (formal) tone throughout.
- Q - Quête (The Quest/Introduction): Formally state why you are calling.
- U - Utilité Pratique (Practical Logistics): Ask about the core details (Who, What, Where, When, How much).
- I - Interrogation Complexe (Complex Inquiries): Use inversion and hypothetical "Si" clauses to demonstrate advanced grammar.
- Z - Zone de Conclusion (The Closing Zone): End the call professionally.
Let's apply this framework step-by-step.
1. Q - Quête (The Quest/Introduction)
You must set a professional tone immediately. Do not just say "Bonjour" and start asking questions.
- The Action: Introduce yourself and reference the advertisement.
- The Execution:
- "Bonjour Monsieur/Madame. Je me permets de vous contacter suite à votre annonce parue ce matin concernant..." (Hello sir/madam. I am taking the liberty of contacting you following your ad published this morning regarding...)
(I am very interested and I would like to ask you a few questions to get further details. Do you have a few minutes to spare?)

2. U - Utilité Pratique (Practical Logistics)
This is where you gather the basic information (Price, Location, Dates, Conditions). The key is to use polite formulations (Pourriez-vous, Sauriez-vous, Est-ce que).
- Price:
(Could you tell me the exact rate for this service?)
- Location:
(Would you know how to tell me where you are located exactly?)
- Availability:
(What would your availability be for next week?)
3. I - Interrogation Complexe (Complex Inquiries)
This is where you earn the CLB 9. After asking the basic logistics, you must switch your grammatical structure to use Inversion and Hypotheticals.
- The Action (Inversion): Instead of "Est-ce que vous avez...", use "Avez-vous...".
- "Accepteriez-vous un paiement en plusieurs fois ?" (Would you accept payment in installments?)
- "Le matériel est-il fourni ou dois-je l'apporter ?" (Is the equipment provided or do I have to bring it?)
- The Action (Hypotheticals): Invent a specific "What if" scenario to test the examiner.
(If I decide to register with a friend, would it be possible to benefit from a discount?)
(In the event that I have a conflict, will I be able to cancel the session?)

4. Z - Zone de Conclusion (The Closing Zone)
When the examiner hints that the 5 minutes are almost up, do not end abruptly. Close the conversation with professional elegance.
- The Action: Thank the person, summarize your intention, and say goodbye.
- The Execution:
(I thank you infinitely for all this very clear information.)
(I will think about all this and I will contact you again by the end of the week. I wish you an excellent day.)
Stop Freezing, Start Practicing
The Q-U-I-Z framework provides the structure, but actually formulating these questions out loud without hesitating requires intense practice. You must train your tongue to use inversion and the conditional tense automatically.
