TCF Writing Task: Synthesis Writing Strategy (Section 3)

Total Word Count: 1,700+ words

The TCF Canada Expression Écrite Section 3 is the hardest writing task in the exam.

Mission: Read 2 short documents (150-200 words each) presenting opposing viewpoints on a topic, then write a synthesis (180-200 words) summarizing BOTH perspectives objectively.

The Trap: Students write an argumentative essay ("I think X is right because...") instead of a neutral summary. This loses points immediately.

The Solution: Follow the "Presents-Contrasts-Concludes" (PCC) Structure and use objective language.


Part 1: What is a Synthesis? (Definition)

A synthesis is NOT:

  • ❌ An opinion piece.
  • ❌ A defense of one side.
  • ❌ A critique.

A synthesis IS:

  • ✅ A neutral summary of multiple perspectives.
  • ✅ A presentation of the key arguments from both sides.
  • ✅ A comparison showing how the views differ.

Analogy: You are a journalist reporting on a debate. You present both sides fairly, without taking a position.


Part 2: The PCC Structure (Your Template)

P - Presents the Topic (Introduction)

Length: 1-2 sentences. Goal: Introduce the issue neutrally.

Formula: "Le document A et le document B abordent la question de [Topic]. Ils présentent deux points de vue opposés."

Example: "Les deux documents traitent de l'interdiction des téléphones portables à l'école. Le premier défend cette mesure, tandis que le second s'y oppose."


C - Contrasts the Arguments (Body)

Length: 4-5 sentences (2 per document + 1 transition). Goal: Present the main argument from each document.

Formula for Document A: "D'une part, le document A souligne que [Argument A]. Selon l'auteur, [Supporting Point A]."

Formula for Document B: "D'autre part, le document B affirme que [Argument B]. L'auteur estime que [Supporting Point B]."

Transition Words:

  • D'une part... D'autre part... (On one hand... On the other hand...)
  • Tandis que (Whereas).
  • En revanche (On the contrary).
  • Cependant (However).

Example: "D'une part, le document A soutient que l'interdiction des téléphones améliore la concentration des élèves. Selon l'auteur, les écrans sont une source de distraction majeure pendant les cours.

D'autre part, le document B affirme que cette interdiction est excessive. L'auteur estime que les téléphones sont des outils pédagogiques utiles et qu'il suffit de les réguler."


C - Concludes Neutrally (Conclusion)

Length: 1-2 sentences. Goal: Wrap up WITHOUT giving your opinion.

Formula: "En somme, ces deux documents illustrent la complexité du débat sur [Topic]." OR "Ainsi, le sujet de [Topic] suscite des opinions divergentes."

Example: "En somme, la question de l'interdiction des téléphones à l'école divise les éducateurs et soulève des enjeux à la fois pédagogiques et pratiques."

Part 3: Full Model Synthesis (Example)

Topic: Should plastic bags be banned?

Document A (Pro-Ban): "Plastic bags pollute oceans and kill marine life. Banning them would force consumers to use reusable bags, reducing waste significantly."

Document B (Anti-Ban): "Banning plastic bags would hurt small businesses that rely on them for packaging. Reusable bags are more expensive and not always hygienic."


Your Synthesis:

Les deux documents abordent la question de l'interdiction des sacs plastiques. Ils présentent deux perspectives opposées sur cette mesure environnementale.

D'une part, le document A souligne que les sacs plastiques polluent les océans et menacent la faune marine. Selon l'auteur, leur interdiction encouragerait l'adoption de sacs réutilisables et réduirait considérablement les déchets.

Part 4: Vocabulary for Objectivity

Avoid Personal Opinions:

  • ❌ "Je pense que..." (I think that...)
  • ❌ "À mon avis..." (In my opinion...)
  • ❌ "Il est clair que..." (It is clear that...)

Use Neutral Reporting Verbs:

  • ✅ "Le document A souligne / affirme / soutient que..." (Document A emphasizes / states / maintains that...)
  • ✅ "Selon l'auteur..." (According to the author...)
  • ✅ "L'auteur estime / considère / juge que..." (The author believes / considers / judges that...)

Transition Phrases:

  • D'une part... D'autre part... (On one hand... On the other hand...)
  • Tandis que... (Whereas...)
  • En revanche... (On the contrary...)
  • Cependant... (However...)

Part 5: Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Taking a Side

  • ❌ "Le document A a raison parce que..." (Document A is right because...)
  • ✅ "Le document A soutient que..."

Mistake 2: Adding Personal Examples

  • ❌ "Dans mon pays, nous utilisons des sacs réutilisables..."
  • ✅ Stick to what the documents say.

Mistake 3: Ignoring One Document

Both documents must be treated equally. Don't write 80% about Document A and 20% about Document B.

Mistake 4: Copying Sentences Verbatim

Paraphrase. Don't copy entire sentences from the source.

  • Source: "Plastic bags are dangerous for animals."
  • Paraphrase: "Les sacs plastiques représentent un danger pour la faune."

Part 6: Time Management

You have 60 minutes for Section 3.

  • Minutes 0-10: Read both documents carefully. Underline key arguments.
  • Minutes 10-15: Plan your synthesis on scratch paper (Intro, Arg A, Arg B, Conclusion).
  • Minutes 15-45: Write your synthesis.
  • Minutes 45-55: Proofread and count words.
  • Minutes 55-60: Final check for accents and agreements.
