Health and Wellness: Navigating Care and Lifestyle

Health is a universal topic, but the way we discuss it varies across cultures. In the TEF and TCF exams, health often appears in Compréhension Orale (news about medical breakthroughs or healthy living) and in Expression Orale (calling a doctor's office or advising a friend on their lifestyle). Moreover, if you are planning to live in Canada, understanding how to communicate your symptoms and understand a prescription is a survival skill.

In this guide, we cover everything from common ailments to the vocabulary of well-being.

1. Common Ailments and Symptoms (Les maux)

Expressing Pain:

In French, we use Avoir mal à + [Body Part].

• J'ai mal à la tête (Headache).
• J'ai mal au ventre (Stomachache).

2. At the Doctor's Office (Chez le médecin)

• : An appointment.

3. Insurance and Administration

In France/Canada, the administrative side of health is very important.

• La sécurité sociale (France) / La RAMQ (Quebec).

4. Wellness and Lifestyle (Le bien-être)

This is a favorite topic for TCF argument tasks.

5. Strategic Vocabulary for TEF/TCF

Giving Advice (TEF Section B):

If your task is to persuade a friend to quit smoking or join a gym:

• “Tu devrais prendre soin de toi.” (You should take care of yourself).
• “C'est primordial pour ton bien-être sur le long terme.” (It's essential for your wellness in the long term).

6. Cultural Note: The "Pharmacie" in France

In France, a pharmacy is more than a store; it’s a medical resource. Pharmacists can often give medical advice for minor ailments without a doctor’s visit. In Canada, pharmacies are more like general stores (like Jean Coutu or Shoppers Drug Mart).
